3.2 PCV replacement

Failure symptoms for faulty PCV

1. Oil weeping past the cap - this was my only symptom

2. High pitched whistle - I had this happen on my Audi 2.0T PCV and it was very loud

3. Check engine light - possible codes P0171, P0174, P0507

To check my PCV function I removed the oil fill cap with the engine at idle.

- With the old valve the RPM only changed slightly

- With the new valve the RPM change was much more noticeable but still less than what I get for my Audi doing the same test.

Here are some pictures

New PCV valve

T30 Torx bolts Torque to 7 Ft*Lbs

Disconnect connector on the right
Unlatch connector on the left

Close up of right side

Close up of left side

Latch on the left side

Wire tie used in place of broken latch on the left side

Less clean than I expected

Take care

Paul

For my Land Rover I don't have to add oil between changes

But others with the 3.2 apparently do have to add oil.

Here is a useful link that I found about oil consumption on the 3.2

Freel2 3.2 Owners,

I realize that this is a small group of people.

However I wanted to update you on what I found on my Niece's S80
(it was my Son's but we sold it to her, something about Uncle Bob come's to mind but I will need to change my name to make that fit)

This is the same 3.2 that is used in the LR2 3.2 and the PCV would fit either vehicle.

The Valve in the S80 had failed but there was no obvious indication only a sudden unexpected increase in oil consumption and misfires due to oil fouled sparkplugs (#2 was the worst but #6 had some as well).

If you read thru the service bulletin from Volvo you will see that Volvo wants to confirm that the PCV is working and not allowing liquid to pass thru to the small channel and if it isn't working then repair the PCV first before looking for other sources of oil consumption.

The S80 fails this test so it now has a new PCV

Instead of a Volvo box or Land Rover box I was able to get this part aftermarket but this is the original part.
Just cheaper because I didn't have to pay the extra markup.
I don't recommend an inferior part get one like this or just go to the parts counter at LAND ROVER

Get the PCV with the FOMOCO marking.

For the curious among you if you check the circular part of your original PCV you will see that it says VOLVO.

The Volvo did foul the sparkplugs and start misfiring so a faulty PCV isn't actually very benign.

It you car and you can do what you like but my recommendation is clear.

Happy Motoring

Paul

I actually bought my PC valve from an LR dealership over a year+ now and their pricing was actually not that bad at the time when I factored in shipping and exchange rate and my discount. I may need to check my torque settings though. There was a very slight honk I was attributing to it but that cleared itself up for the time being.

Great info as usual, Thumbs Up
