Start button, is it a common Fault

Hi all our little 2011 HSE has developed a fault i suspect Stop/Start Button, but wanted to run it past you first, ok we unlock car with fob, insert fob into holder, and then press the stop start button, nothing happens, no lights nothing, tried it with foot on the brake etc, nothing, BUT if we sort of move our finger to the left side of the button then it sometimes works as normal. IS this a common Fault? dealer part only?

Start button only one of a number of conditions needed to allow a start signal to be given to the electronics and then fire up starter motor, etc.
You need to read any OBD Error Codes that may be logged.

Have you searched the forum for starting problems?

Without any real clues, here comes the guesswok.

Steering Lock
Gear Selector Switch
Bonnet Switch
ETC (other mechanical switches) FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Expensive Guesswork list that, me thinks i will start with the cheapest maybe a new pushbutton?

Funny you should post this, I have a 2014 Se tech which does exactly the same. Also sometimes when stopping the engine you have to press the button several times to get it to stop. The way it's unreliable for both stopping and starting makes me think it's a problem with the button itself rather than some other electronic problem. Will be interested to hear if you swap the button and that fixes it.

I have not seen one of these buttons off the car, are they sealed can you get in to it, I would be tempted to remove the button and give it a good spray with WD40 or electrical contact cleaner. However I would also be tempted to buy a new one first.

His proved to be a Gear-Selector problem, which was solved successfully.

Not a gear selector problem Ian. It was finally diagnosed (after a number of red herrings over 2 years!!) as the starter solonoid behaving erratically
Currently continues to behave normally after a new starter motor fitted Very Happy

Sorry Jenks, I thought that your earlier posting marked the conclusion of your initial intermittent non start problem, as it ended with a period of reliable running.

It read
OK well I think I can wrap this one up now

The non cranking issue has gradually become more frequent since it first started, though I was always able to get going by a combination of moving the gear lever and switching the ignition on and off.
Decided it was time to get it sorted, so took it to local non Land Rover indy who ran diagnostics which showed "brake and inhibitor switch fault"
Two switches replaced. Cost of parts £10 plus a couple of hours work. All now seems to be good Thumbs Up


I still think it may be relevant and worth checking, as the garage found the faulty switch codes, and they do form part of the start sequence. Although the OP does not report moving selector helped start, it might be worth a wiggle. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

At that point I thought the issue was resolved, but 6 months later it began to crop up again and then eventually failed totally which turned out to be the starter solenoid

yup i ordered the new button direct from landrover today, so will let you know when it has arrived and fitted

I would change the starter motor contacts and plunger seeing your car is now 11 years old, they tend to need changing after about 80,000 miles, cost is about £15 and an hours work only, which is easy even for the DIY mechanic.
