2007 Freelander 2 i6 SE Auto Stornoway Grey
i6 P0365 P0340 P0016

Hi all,
bought FL2 2007 with 3.2 petrol engine with 215k km. First 3k km were flawless.
Then I got couple of error codes. It all started with P0365.
Only symtom was hesitation when starting.
The engine almost stopped like with bad battery and then one more revolution and started.
Recently on highway when overtaking the car lost power so I pulled off.
More codes appeared on top of P0365: P0340, P0016, P0018 and 0351, 0353, 0355 and P0069.
Cleared codes and restarted the car. Next 60km was almost ok with just one small power cut.
When i got home I reread codes and only P0340, P0365 and P0016 persist.

So far I changed oil 0w30 a5/b5 and air filter, changed crankshaft sensor
and checked that camshaft sensors work.
Tried to take out VCT solenoid to clean but it holds firmly.
Next I will try to change spark plugs as these have almost 80k km on them.
Here I read about swapping relays since it might be power issue.

I cant find the common condirion when the engine dies, mostly when slowing down.
Also when I was overtaking. Or lost power, then after a few seconds ok, then again.
The engine sounds ok to me, no rattling etc.

What could I check to get rid of these codes?

Did you use a genuine or OEM CPS? From memory, the dealer price was not ridiculous The si6 is a Volvo engine so they will also carry the part. All your codes lead the same place.

In addition but a different direction, these vehicles are battery hogs so a strong battery is a must.

I used lucas seb1624 8233388RMP. When I got first the code P0365 I checked a few videos about it and ordered the sensor without any testing. After change nothing happened. When I measured the old sensor it had similar values, so it could be good.
Same thing with camshaft sensors, today I unmounted them and tested that they change voltage, so i suppose that is enough to say they are good. Cables also look good, but it may be good idea to check if they are not broken.
My friend had on his car such cable that had only copper dust inside and it lasted for 10 years without problems.
As for the battery I tried new one with the same result. Starting was a little bit faster.

The Variable Valve Lift Solenoid can cause codes like that

Note: the Si6 has two of these solenoids each operate 3 cylinders

Here is the part number

LAND ROVER LR025967

Volvo 31216281 (same part in a Volvo Box)

Take a look at this thread

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic37689.html

Good luck

Paul

Thanks, ive been reading couple of posts here. Today I tested vvt solenoid electrically, it had 7 ohms which seems ok.
I will try to pull it out, but it holds firmly. Is there any trick to get it out? Service manual talks only about one tx30.
And the second is secured under the engine mount.
Thanks also for the part number, LR part is relatively cheap here.

The engine once stopped with a sucking sound. so it appears that PCV should be changed too.
The spark plugs looked horribly, but they were there many kms.

I found that you can change only the PCV membrane. Is it the right thing to do?

I found also that the fuel pressure sensor does not last long. In this case volvo part is cheaper than LR, maybe i replace it too.

The Intake has Variable Valve timing and Variable Valve lift.

Variable Valve Timing (1 solenoid per engine)
https://landroverforums.com/forum/lr2-35/p...le-113192/
30731116, Volvo
31251224, Volvo
36002690, Volvo
7G9N9M424AA, FORD
LR011224 LAND ROVER

Variable Valve Lift (2 solenoids per engine)
LR025967 Land Rover
31216281 Volvo

I haven't replaced either for my 2008 3.2
but your issue may be the VVT (Variable Valve Timing)
instead of the VVL (Variable Valve Lift)

As for the PCV you can replace the diaphragm if you prefer but it isn't easy to do

I'll post a link to a video.

Take care

Paul

This video is for the VOLVO 3.0T which has a similar PCV but not identical to the 3.2.

If you go to 0:37 in the video you will see the diaphragm solution and the part number is

LR023777 this isn't a VOLVO part not with a LR at the beginning

Here is the replacement procedure if you decide to do the entire PCV

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic32107.html

Good luck

Thanks for the part numbers and video.
Today I managed to check the vvt solenoid. It clicks well with 9v battery.
It was not too much dirty as it has filter on the oil input side.
Unfortunately I dont have new one to compare them.
First impression is that the movement range is only about 3mm,
between bottom of the hole and golden line.
I am attaching image of spark plug on cylinder 6.

The sparkplug does look old and I would replace it but it isn't fouled with carbon.

That sparkplug shouldn't cause misfirers.

If the PCV was defective then the sparkplug ceramic should be black.

Note: #6 is the cylinder closest to the transmission or AC Compressor if you prefer.

Please confirm that you removed that one.

And you need to attach the image to your post, if you only upload it just goes into your gallery.

Here is the picture

I've never tried to diagnose the VVT solenoid so I can't comment on what it should do.

Take care

Paul

I recommend that you get some Denso Iridium TT sparkplugs

DENSO 4704 IRIDIUM TT

That is what Volvo switched to for later 3.2's

You can buy them in a Volvo Box if you like just tell Volvo you have a 2010 S80 3.2

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic35121.html?highlight=denso+tt

As for the PCV, do the glove Test and if it passes then leave it for later

The glove test is described in this link

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic37372.html?highlight=glove+test

I do suspect that you VVT or VVL solenoid is not working intermittently.

It is also possible that you Fuel Pressure Sending unit isn't working (but that should give different codes)

Good Luck and let us know what you find out

Paul

Come across codes 0016 and 0018 in the manual:

0016 possible causes:
* Poor engine oil quality
* Camshaft inlet sensor incorrectly installed
* Crankshaft position sensor incorrectly installed
* Camshaft inlet sensor, short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
* Camshaft inlet sensor air-gap to target rotor greater than specification
* Excessive run out on target rotor
* Loose variable valve timing actuator chain drive or tensioners
* Damaged, worn timing chain

0018 possible causes:
* Poor engine oil quality/condition
* Incorrectly adjusted camshafts
* Damaged (worn) timing chain
* Variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid/circuit fault
* VVT unit fault

Changed oil to shell helix ultra a5/b5, checked sensors. Today I change spark plugs to denso tt.
Last thing from electrical devices is VVT solenoid that should arive hopefully soon.
Maybe the relay that powers the sensors could be bad and shuts down has some resistance and that means lower voltage for ecm?
As it is quite cold outside to check the timing chain i have to leave this on land rover service on 15.12.

On the other board the P0016 and P0018 was discussed

https://landroverforums.com/forum/lr2-35/p...192/page2/

Here is a quote from that board

Quote:
Hello... In closing I did replace the oil control solenoid. Found a Gates VVS194 for $66.00 and runs perfect. Turns out the P0016 and P0018 are triggered by the bank 1 and 2 (intake cam for VVT diagnostic purposes) are triggered by the intake cam not being in sync with the exhaust cam. It did take a bit for the ECU to sort itself out but all is well now.

Here are some part numbers

30731116, Volvo
31251224, Volvo
36002690, Volvo
7G9N9M424AA, FORD
LR011224 LAND ROVER

Remember the engine was built at a FORD plant and used by LAND ROVER and VOLVO

So all of the above are interchangeable

The GATES VVS194 is a good choice for about 70 bucks (in the US, I have no idea how much it will cost where you are)

Let us know

Thanks

Paul

PS if the VVT Solenoid works for you as well I am adding this to Typical Repairs https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic32504.html

Thanks. I ordered PIERBURG 7.06117.18.0.

Today I found this interesting video.
Interference from spark plugs seemed like bad camsaft sensor signal.
The author stresses buying original parts as the cheap ones could be cheap for a reason

Today I replaced spark plugs and vvt solenoid. The car started easily so I went to 16km trip with a few stops.
At first I was surprised by 99.9l/km avg consumption.
But it was short after start so i did a reset and then it seemed okay maybe a little bit higher and then normal.
All seemed well
Codes 0016 and 0018 went away and code 340 was only in pending codes. No check engine light, no stall.
When I returned home I reversed to park the car and the engine stalled.
I tried to start it and then as soon as I hit the pedal the engine stalled.
Third try there was the hesitation on start but I managed to park the car.
All three codes appeared on diagnostic.
