United Kingdom 2015 Freelander 2 SD4 SE Auto Orkney Grey

I fitted the HiD conversion kit a few months ago and can honestly say that it is the best c£50 I have spent in many a year. My car has projector lenses and the dipped is bright with a good cut off and no dazzling of uncoming vehicles.
This followed both a number of failures of HB3 halogen bulbs including having to drive 20 miles across the lanes of Gloucestershire on fog lights - fxxking nightmare.
In summary the best upgrade you can do PROVIDING you have projector lenses. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Agree totally with above. Best mod you will do to a late model freelander. 👍 Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

United Kingdom

After my Night Breakers collapsed (also in Gloucestershire) I’m looking at LED bulbs. I have a 2014 FL2 with projector (single filament) lenses. Not the latest ones, since I have the option to raise and lower the light beam on a knurled wheel on the dashboard.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an LED kit that actually work? I looked at the Phillips ones which are fiendishly expensive, but if they work, and last longer than the halogens then I’m quite interested…

Many thanks..

As mentioned above - I and many others have gone for the Xenon conversion purchased from here :

No idea about LED but somewhere on the forum a member had fitted some but didnt rate them very highly.

Anyway - welcome to the forum. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

After reading all this thread I have ordered some HID bulbs and balasts for my 2013 dynamic with projector lights
I am now just wondering if I have made a bit of a mistake
It seems from research that the main culprit for the poor light output is not the poor HB3 bulbs but the fact the cooling in the housing is poor and the reflector gets burnt effectively cutting the light output
Even the lower wattage hid bulbs from the factory can burn the reflector and this problem seems not to be just a freelander issue but many cars with projector lights

I have now found some replacement reflectors but they are for the factory HID lights has anyone gone down this route of swapping the reflector it seems its only a few screws that hold it into the headlight
I could then fit factory HID bulbs and balasts the only thing that would be missing would be self leveling
Looking at the headlights the screw holes for the balasts on the headlights are there but the hole is fully moulded in so would need cutting out

Obviously if I go down this route my kit would be no use to me

So has anyone done it or have any insight

@pinhead
"I am now just wondering if I have made a bit of a mistake"
why do you say that ?

All I can say is that the Stealth HID kit from HIDS4U, that I installed in July 2021, has worked perfectly in my projector lens lights.

I wish I had done it earlier instead of wasting time and money on various high power halogen bulbs and LED HB3 replacements. Jules

My understanding was that putting an HB3 halogen bulb inside a projector lens light designed for HID was a cost cutting measure by JLR. The projector lens lights simply do not perform well with halogen bulbs and in addition the halogen bulbs get hotter than normal (for a halogen) which reduces their life span. Jules

Thanks for the response jules

So when I got home my kit had arrived

I quickly got to work installing it on 1 headlight as I wanted to see the diference
During the install I looked as carefully as I could for reflector burn and I couldn't see any the part immediately next to the bulb holder has some burning but I don't think it extended to the reflector area

The bad news is the kit doesn't work
Maybe a faulty kit not sure I made a harness up to wire it direct to the battery and still nothing but a slight flicker then nothing at all

No because they were out of stock at the time
It wasn't a cheap kit though supposedly a decent one

Have you checked the plugs are attached the correct way?
The Stealth kit, where you plug the original car loom into the ballast, the plug needs to be reversed, ie plugged in 180° to what appears to be the normal position. Found this when mine didn't work initially. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I got my Stealth HID kit from here: https://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/h11-hid-conversion-kit/

They seem to have stock. As Jules says, they are an absolute transformation and easy to fit. Not sure yet what I'll do at Mot time......... either risk it or maybe spend 10 mins before and after replacing with the original halogens.
