Year 9 Servicing

Car due for year 9 service:

Full online history with Years 1 - 7 by main dealer and year 8 by Maltings Off Road Ltd Doncaster.

As Maltings, the nearest indie who can update the service record, is a fair old distance from home and then, fairly remote from civilisation as we know it, I am tempted to get the year 9 service by our local 2 bay garage who currently look after the wife's car and our MOT tests. The local garage is trusted.

Is maintaining the online service history on a 9 year old car worth the wasted day going to Maltings or should I just let the local chap have at it and do the MOT at the same time?

It's a car, not a spaceship, today had my car in at the local mechanic like every year, like previous cars. All the invoices are in a lever arch folder. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

It depends why you want to maintain the on-service history (you peace of mind or retained value when you flog it) and how long you wish to keep the car.

Personally I think your local garage will be fine. Its routine a service after all; change some filters and put some new oil in. and the MOT is an inspection (leaks, corrosion), test some electrical parts and the brakes, and wiggle of things to see of they are loose (in essence anyway - no disrespect to MOT testers on here intended) - but all do-able by a local garage.

Many people have no interest in car maintenance and rely on the annual service to tell them the wipers are worn, a bulb is out, the tyres need replacing and the brake pads are at their limits etc. and all that is very do-able by a local garage. The Freelander 2 is more Ford than JLR in many ways, with only the drive system being in anyway special and if that goes wrong you are better off at a specialist such as Bell rather than a JLR dealership whose experience is more based on warranty work for the newer vehicles, IMO. Jules

On a 2 year old car yes, on a 9 year old car? Not a chance it would be seeing a main dealer.

I had two main dealer services done after I bought my FL2 on the last service by the time I got home ten miles away I got a call to say it was ready I think they rushed it through as they needed the courtesey Disco they lent me back asap having questioned them how it was done so quick "Oh we had three Technicians workingon it " ???? I never took it back after that and got the HGV Mech to do it where I worked, dont trust main dealer servicing. 2013 FL2 XS.

I agree with much of what has been said previously. The only note of caution would be to make sure they use quality parts. A colleague at work uses his local garage. He had months of poor running after a full service. It turned out they had used a cheap aftermarket fuel filter. They replaced it for nothing but the hassle of poor starting and the occasional breakdown stopped him enjoying the FL2.

Ditto all of the above - just ensure you trust your local mechanic and that they use quality parts and correct oil. Difference in 2nd hand value for dealer service and indy service aint worth worrying about for a 9 yo car. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

agree - full dealer service at 9 years plus makes little difference to selling price, same for expensive cleaning products.

But I always use OEM, better or genuine parts. Jules

I would buy from someone who services car themselves but uses genuine LR filters and quality oils and keeps service schedule as per recommendations.

All done with a nice new service book provided by the garage and a clean MOT test pass to boot. Insurance to renew in December and then no more (planned) spends on cars until June. Thumbs Up
