Hi

I'm not a newbie to Land Rovers but I am a newbie to Freelanders.

I'm seriously looking for a good late 4x4 Freelander, I'm not in the UK & they are few and far between where I am.

My question is do all the 4x4's have the rotating knob or do the later ones have push buttons like the Discovery Sport?

The reason I ask is I've seen one or two being sold as 4x4 without the rotating knob, I'm thinking the sellers don't know what they've got.

Mine is a 2014 and has the buttons between the electronic handbrake & the gear stick - no knobs needed  2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

Later ones moved to switches for special functions and hill descent control.
However that was a backward step as the rotary knob was much easier to operate than the buttons; try using them whilst bouncing along on rough off-roads - you have to take your eyes off the road to select the correct button or feel about with your fingers.
Very much a case of the style winning over function and safety.
Also for RH drive cars the hazard warning switch is now in a really idiotic place. Jules

Indeed, the buttons all work - just not so easy to use - but most people need them only rarely - so it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. In fact, the later cars are actually the better ones IMO- the SD4 being the best (with its autobox) - but I'm biased. Jules

I have a MY13 petrol, often I have forgotten to press the buttons for sand etc & only later realised, actually the car works well in the normal driving mode. The hill descent is handy.

Get an auto, great for crawling over rocks, towing & city driving.

Yes, but its an idiotic place to install a button to be used quickly in an emergency.
Just get someone who's not driven a late FL2 before to find it quickly whilst driving. Jules

Thanks you to all for responding. I feel happier now knowing the later models had buttons, does anyone know when they were introduced? I would prefer an auto but it's not a deal breaker for me. I'm currently considering 5 cars from 2011 to 2014 the only problem is the closest one is 150km away & 2 are 500km away so I need to get all the knowledge I can before I head off to view.

Pre MY13 has completely different electrics.

When we got our new Freelander it was 263km between Orange (not France, been there) & Manly. Actually once to look at the car & again to pick it up as it had a terrible registration date for our purposes, it was in storage for a few months, & then on to some camping. We seem to carry a lot more crap these days.

Make sure comes with a 5th full size spare wheel & not a fart repair kit. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

can't see it for dust !...... I would change the pollen filter. 2013 FL2 XS.

Pollen filter works perfectly ok. I have a piece of gutter open cell foam as a pre filter from the air intake near the battery.

When you drive on corrugated roads with the windows a bit open dust is not an issue. But suddenly a roadtrain appears & you put the windows up. But because of the corrugations the windows go down. A pain in the neck & a mouthful of dust.
