GPS doesn’t do altitudes very accurately at all. Heights can be inferred at the position from surveyed data and would be looked up from a data table. Height is normally inferred from atmospheric pressure but corrections have to be applied regularly to account for pressure changes that drive our weather. For example I have to tell my garmin watch my altitude which it then compares with current atmospheric pressure and then applies an offset to the current calculated height based on atmospheric pressure. It can then be accurate to less than a meter but will need correcting as weather systems pass.

Not on a Freelander2,I don't even think the post2013 cars have it, generally it is on stand-alone sat navs. M Peugeot 3008 had it as a built in but it was based on a TomTom and the height reading wasn't accurate assuming the height datum was mean low water, if it wasn't based on that it must have been based on some sea bed somewhere. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

I use a Garmin 7" satnav. Have 2 of them & both of them the altitude figures are often all over the place.

Sometimes the car must have a pretty tall snorkel that I am unaware of installing! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

As a retired professional land surveyor, I'm genuinely interested why you need to know the land elevation from a satnav?

That information is on the Ordnance Survey website or map's, not need to have a guesstimate figure from a satnav.
The road outside my house is 185M elevation, and I can see for 20 miles + on a clear day. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

GPS is much less accurate in the vertical direction (Altitude) than in the horizontal (Ground Position)

It seems that the satellite position is poor for vertical positioning, and the actual mathematical modelling by the GPS makes it even worse, and more importantly inconsistent.

see article for explanation

http://gpsinformation.net/main/altitude.htm

Together with GPS velocity, altitude is the default reading on my Garmin GPS when no destination is set on map. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 79k+ miles) (MY2015)

You can zoom in to about street level & click on the map to about a metre tolerance.

https://en-gb.topographic-map.com/map-cgt/...2C-3.75894

Just tried it for our street in Sydney & it's pretty right.

Failing that if you walk from the old place to the new place & there are 3 steps ahead, depending on one's age, there is a major increase in altitude! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

But won’t the altitude vary from person to person, dependent upon their height? Rolling with laughter

Something along the lines of less oxygen at the higher altitude when one feels giddy from standing up! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

The stupid thing is that once you’ve calibrated the barometer/height calculation of your watch (come small wrist computer) it then wants to do a self calibration based on your location overnight. That’s ok if you sleep on the ground floor or even if you sleep on the 1st floor, but you can imagine the error that gets baked in if you sleep in the penthouse of a block of flats!

Many phones have a calculated altitude on them, although it's based on atmospheric pressure, so not 100% accurate.

Mine is currently about 80M optimistic, but it'll change with atmospheric pressure. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.
