Propshaft bearings

Morning all!

Thank for the add to this great group.

I have an 2010 SD4 auto. 102k miles.

Have noticed this last week a whirring noise from an indeterminate point somewhere underneath the car?
No grinding or crunching.
It is almost like or tyre noise (but it isn't that), tyres all fully inflated, no damage to them.
It increases frequency and loudness with speed, starting at about 10mph.
It is independent of engine revs.
it is not linked to the cabin fan or air-con.
It doesn't change when steering, or turning corners.
Sometimes it is very quiet, sometime pretty loud.
It doesn't change when either the foot or handbrake are applied.

The rear diff bearing and pinion were replaced at 35k miles.
The haldex replaced in 2018.
I serviced the haldex last year.

I use the car for towing a fair bit. There are no error warnings on the dash. I don't have a plug-in error doohickey unfortunately.

So, I put the car on stands yesterday :

1. There is no abnormal play in the wheels (bearings), but one of the fronts does an odd thing - when spun up by hand then suddenly stopped by hand, you can hear something continuing to rotate for a few seconds which sounds a bit metallic.

2. The prop-shaft can be moved by hand up and down inside the support bearings 5mm or so. Is that amount of free play normal, or are the bearings on the way out?

Hoping for some help from those wiser than me. Bow down

4! Blimey! Are they meant to have play in the bearings?
