Removing Tow Bar Electrics

Good morning everyone. Me and my partner use our Freelander 2 quite often for off roading and green laneing. We brought the car with the tow bar already on it and do plan to tow with the car in future. After contacting a couple of companies about getting it swapped out for a removable tow bar, they told us it would be a bad idea as the mounting could sit lower than what we already have. Even if it doesn't then there is a high chance it'll fill up with dirt and grime over time and render it useless.

So my next port of call is to see how easy it would be to remove our existing one and then put it back on in the future when we want to tow. Here are a couple of pictures of the wires coming up through the rubber bung inside of the boot.

It looks to me that the main wire comes up through the rubber bung in the floor, One part goes to the black box, one to the grey terminal block, an earth and a fuse block. Is it as easy as disconnecting all of that and pulling the wires through? Or if I disconnect it all will it also disconnect the rear lights and parking sensors?

Thanks for the help. Thumbs Up

You should be able to bring the socket through the hole in the floor and just leave it lying loose until you need it again. You’d also need to get the original bung to close off the hole.

This did cross my mind but didn't think the hole was big enough for it to fit. Has anyone actually tried this and can confirm that Simon's idea works? Smile

Well, that’s the way I fitted the cable harness! You connect up the wiring and then pass the socket through the hole in the floor.

Ah I see! Laughing in the videos that I watched, they were doing it the other way and passing the cables up through the bung. Does anyone know where I might purchase a new bung to seal the hole as nothing obvious pops up when I do the Googles. Thumbs Up

Have a look and see if any of these match the dimensions:

You will need to copy/paste the whole URL as the forum software truncates it at the "#"

You’d never get the trailer module (the black box) through the hole!

Laughing they were passing the cables up through the bung and then connecting them to the box/terminal block.

Those tow bar electrics look the same as what I had on mine I cannot remember which end of the loom goes through the hole but one end does very easy to fit and uninstall if it's the outer end that goes through you may have to split the socket and take the center out
