This would seem to be an urban myth! I asked LR technical services about this and they replied that adding the trailer module - recoding - makes no change to either the engine or the auto gearbox. Fitting a proper - not necessarily genuine LR - wiring harness will switch on the towing indicator in the instrument display and switch off the fog light on the vehicle. The only thing it won’t do is switch off the reversing sensors and that needs the 'recode'. But with a dash mounted switch to switch off the sensors so close to the gear selector that hardly seems worth the expense.

As can be seen in the picture, connecting a dedicated, but non LR, trailer cable harness is very straightforward.

Hi chaps, found this very helpful fitting a Witor type Towbar and single 7 pin electrics. Car 2010 but never fitted with Towbar. Purchased Towsure kit. All fitted perfectly. Just two 20mm holes drilled in bumper under LH reflector and temporary removal of the 4 self tappers on bumper bottom to get it to flex. Pushed up Towbar between silencer and bumper using trolley Jack with wife on the handle. This 78 yr old no longer as agile as he used to be.
Electrical connections to loom by grey plug frustrating having made a perfect but non working job!
Then discovered a number of identical coloured wires in the loom bundle. Tried each one in turn until I got one that worked. Used up a dozen scotch locks doing so. However all works now so tidied up with sticky fabric loom tape.
Kit cost £185 and a days work. Well pleased and thanks for info on this site. My car is an auto.
