France 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Barolo Black
Gearbox noise in 2nd, 5th and 6th gears

Hi folks,

My 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 manual transmission has been making a strange sound for a while now. It only happens in 2nd, 5th and 6th gears and only happens during power transmission (or engine braking).

I recently had the clutch replaced and I think the sound has started since then but I can't be sure.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: it's a TD4 - sorry - I've corrected the post

I thought all SD4 s were autobox because the manual gearbox couldnt handle the torque.

ah maybe a typo by the OP Jules

I dont know why a clutch replacement should cause the gearbox issues if the new clutch is behaving normally. But the temporal relationship between the two would suggest a link. Jules

Maybe the place that did the clutch change didn't put oil back in the gearbox? Or at least the correct type of oil. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Why do you need to drain the gearbox oil to replace a clutch on a FL2 ?
I've never had to do that on other cars. Jules

If you pull the drive shaft out, the oil comes out the hole. Wink Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Which you have to do on the FL2 to get the gearbox off I presume.

Ive never taken the gearbox off a FL2. Jules

Indeed. It's almost impossible to remove the gearbox, without removing the LH side drive shaft.
I did once see a quick fit clutch clinic leave the drive shafts in place, simply by unbolting the bell housing and swinging the gearbox out the way enough to access the clutch. This particular clutch clinic didn't have a good reputation for quality work, so to do the job properly, the gearbox needs removing, hence removing the LH drive shaft first. Not sure how the gearbox/clutch can be effected except by some end pressure on the input shaft.

But interestingly the manual shows 1 - 2 and 5 - 6 gears share the same gearbox intermediate shaft, 3 - 4 are on another and reverse is on a third.

So your symptoms seem to make sense as a gearbox bearing problem. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Hang on- How have you replaced the clutch on an automatic gearbox ? They dont have a clutch.

Change the ATF. If that doesn't help then I'd take it to an automotive gearbox specialist. Automotive gearboxes are beyond the DIY capability of most of us. Jules

Thanks for this - this seems to make a lot of sense... assuming it is a gearbox bearing problem, what would the solution be?

Also, my TD4 is no longer starting. It stared out as an intermittent problem... where every now and then it would just click and not start... but if I just tried a few times it would work... it got progressively worse so that now it won't start at all, just clicking. I've tried a battery booster and have recharged the battery so it seems like it is not the battery. Probably unrelated but maybe not?

Thanks in advance,

Jody

Starter solenoid could easily be you starting issue. They are known to fail & repair kits are available for them, if you don’t want to fork out for a replacement starter motor that is.
