Good evening all,

Just had the dreaded “Reduced Performance” message whilst on motorway. Completed the journey ok and on getting home I can see the split in the short hose that feeds into the throttle body at the front of the engine. It looks easy enough to replace myself and I have ordered awe hose on eBay. The problem is I won’t get the new hose until at least Monday now.

I don’t need to go far this weekend but I do need the use of the car. Is there anyway to do a temporary patch up. I am thinking cleaning the hose with thinners and a applying a duct tape patch.

I am worried that driving the car with the split hose could cause further damage to the turbo.

Anyone found a good temporary fix?

Wrap it lots of times with electrical insulation tape, which will hold it as a temporary measure. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

I made a sleeve from a 2L plastic drinks bottle wrapped around pipe and secured with tie wraps.

Lasted till i was able to change. Andy

Hello I experienced the similar catastrophe while travelling down the M5 caravan in tow, I limped to the next service station and was able to park the front of the car over a slight ramp allowing access to the front underside, I removed the rubber hose and plastic connector pipe under the throttle body, removed the lower clamp cleaned all the gunge off, wrapped insulation tape around the split bit of the hose then cut the top and bottom off a coke can and was able to slide the can over the rubber hose which was a snug fit using the top and lower hose clamp making a temporary fix, ordered a replacement pipe kit and drove around Cornwall and returned home plus local trips some 560 miles later the temporary fix never re occurred.

I keep the temporary hose as a spare, what I would do is to fit although expensive the genuine part, some turbos can overboost and could split a none genuine part but it’s your call, only advice.

What I did last week was to replace the other intercooler pipe, the steel one and the two end pipes, 2009, 146K and I think the turbo connector hose had a limited life due to its shape and feel. Maybe excellent hind site, although the pipe is now all new the odd whistling sound has now disappeared maybe the welding was suspect? A couple of hundred quid and the reassurance of the new hoses stops the mindset of a failure.

the only tape to use is ...... Self Amalgamating Tape, it sticks to itself and will take the pressure.

Thank you all for the replies and ideas. In the end I was limited to what materials I have around me at home and fingers crossed it seems to have worked.

Several wraps of gorilla tape and cable ties. It not pretty but works.

I can’t believe how much responsive the engine is, gave it the beans up a steep hill in 2nd and 3rd full load and pulls like a train. This split must have started some time ago and I just didn’t notice the gradual loss of performance.

Anyway hopefully sorted until the new hose arrives.

This came in very handy. Many thanks. Big problem occurred yesterday and I needed the car for a long trip this morning. Sorted it with lots of tape as a temp repair.
