I thought the FL2 projector lens headlights had either an HID unit or a single halogen bulb, with both using a shutter for dipping.

The projector lens was designed for HID units (but cheapskate JLR reserved those for higher models and put a single halogen in place of the HID for lower ones). Trouble is its rubbish both in terms of lumens and durability.

I have the manual headlight adjuster to the right of the light switch in the car but these are the lights.

I have always used the same company for many years, reliable and pretty good quality stuff, as stated don’t go silly like a boy racer and order the blue versions, stick with around 5K balance and you will be well happy, a lot of people fit the very high colour temperature bulbs just to look cool (no pun intended) and all they do is reduce the actual light output, or visible spectrum the human eye can see to be accurate. I'm all for better headlamps and HID conversions, where the headlamps are designed for HID bulbs.

Thanks for the warning. Fingers crossed my MOT tester wont change his decision in the future.

The law states the MoT tester/station has no power to stop you driving the car away, although if stopped you could be prosecuted for having a major fault and as such possibly no insurance, but you can have the car “taken” away to be repaired elsewhere. Almost certain the OP has reflector lenses in which case Osram Nightbreakers or similar would be the option. later cars have Projector lenses taking HB3 bulbs as mentioned by Jules and the conversion kits are, in my opinion, a major safety improvement. Had both HB3 tungsten bulbs blow whilst travelling across country on unlit roads leaving me driving about 10 miles or so on side lights and fog lights - 'kin nightmare. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.
