Tracking Devices?

Does anyone have any experience of GPS Tracking Devices - If so can you get an Insurance Discount for a DIY fitted device.

Below is an example of what I am thinking of, problem is that although only £35 to buy, it has an ongoing £5 per month subscription.

Don't know your planned use but what about a airtag.

I bought a tracking and battery monitoring device from these folks - https://chargemetrix.com/ There is a monthly charge of £4 or thereabouts and it worked very well. However, in my installation - a trailer with a small 22 Ah battery - it drained the battery too much so I’ve disconnected it for now as I’d bought it more for battery monitoring than for tracking, at least over the winter in storage.

I doubt you can get a monthly sim for as little as £5 a month - Giffgaff sims seem to start at £8 and you’d be paying for a lot of data you’d never use. It 'might' be better, if going for a device for which you provide the sim, to use one of the Three sims that are valid for 12 months. They do a 1GB one for £7 up to 24GB for £45.

See https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Three-Mobile-Pa...U&th=1

The units that have the built in sim quite possibly run on the 2G network - mine did - which is still used for things like this and smart electricity meters, etc.

Thanks for replies.

I noticed this review in What Car magazine, and wondered if it would make a difference to my insurance if fitted to my Fl2, as I always have a question on application about tracker fitment.

The ongoing monthly subscription (£5) seems very similar to sim costs anyway.

I take it that the additional battery drain would not be important as long as the FL2 was in use reasonably regularly.

I did come across smaller bluetooth tracking tags whilst searching, which I must admit look intriguing, but I have yet to think of a use.

PS I admit that I have always loved gadgets - but I am getting better at resisting them as I get older.

What about an Airtag? As a tracking device, they are next to useless and Apple are actively working on making them even more useless as trackers.

Great for locating the lost keys, your errant dog, a mislaid briefcase etc - the purpose for which they were designed - but not so good as a tracking device.

Downsides: easily detected with iPhone, Android phone with Apple’s own Android ‘Tracker Detect' app, or any bluetooth detector app, they chirrup if separated from the iPhone that 'owns' them for any length of time, they announce their presence if travelling in close proximity to an 'unknown' iPhone or to an Android phone with the app installed, they are passive and they depend on a network of Apple devices to actually locate them.

Upsides - they are good at doing what they were designed to do - which is simply locating misplaced items.

My sons are Porsche enthusiasts and have had a total of 5 Porsche 911s between them. These have been cars retailing at about the £70k mark so not new. Four of them had trackers built in but as far as we could tell they had never been activated. The argument seems to be that if your car gets stolen then it's highly unlikely that the police will do anything about it as they have more important things to do so they wont go chasing it, they will just put it down as a stolen vehicle and issue a crime number for your insurance. The other thing is that certain cars are generally stolen to order then put straight in a shipping container (ie Faraday cage) at which point the tracking signal disappears. I guess this goes for cars like original Defenders. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
