Arrange your insurance first, letting them know it's not taxed and MOT'd. Once the insurance is valid you can drive it legally if you go straight to a garage where you have a pre booked MOT arranged.

Not too bad a cost for the fuss it avoids, sorry you didn’t win that one, good luck with the next I used to always (through the 70,80,90’s) buy our cars at auctions up until they started putting a private buyers premium on auction sales, to keep trade happy, it made buying at auction not much cheaper than buying private or screwing down a dealer.
