How long should i keep using the battery for my B&D drill.
Drill is now about 10 years old. Both batteries charge up well.
Not used continually. Am i right in thinking the batteries will not hold a charge as long now, and lose power.
Seem to be recharging more often.
What's the thoughts on batteries, should i just replace after this time?

Just keep using them until they no longer do the job you want them to do. Batteries vary - some die very quickly, others seem to keep performing indefinitely, there’s no single right answer.

You will probably find that two new batteries will cost more than a kit that has a new drill complete with batteries.

My JCB drill has had many years of use and done me proud. The batteries had got to the stage were they would just manage two 6mm holes - not good enough, but a new battery was more expensive that a kit including a new drill.
Recently sold the caravan, and gave the JCB drill etc to the new owner as it was still very capable of winding the legs up and down. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Wow, ten years on the B&D batteries is great! I use DeWalt and I'd be lucky if I get 3-5years before they are crap.

My nephew is a tree surgeon and dropped his drill from a great height and it stopped working so he asked me to have a look at it. Inside was a cracked circuit board with a lot of surface mounted components that was clearly unfixable and was connected to the trigger unit by several wires. I had a look around and discovered that you can now buy a trigger with all of the electronics built in (ie no separate circuit board) for under £6. Two wires in from the battery and two to the motor. So I bought one and with a bit a bit of araldite and manipulation fitted it in and it works a treat.

Agree. That's why I have so many, often for 2 drill bits (pilot hole), cross hole countersink & driver. Then one is not swapping bits continuously. The impact driver tends to snap heads off so I generally avoid it.


I used to have all 18v Metabo stuff. Current professional 10.8v or 12v (same thing) is almost as good as 18v from decades ago. The bonus is that 10.8v is a lot lighter. It really is brilliant. I also have a 1000w 240v hammer drill if needed, but barely use it.

Get the biggest battery. When I bought the 10.8v the largest battery capacity was 4.0ah. Now they do 6.0ah. I have a couple of 2.5ah, anything less is a waste of time.

One of Bosch's best tools is their 10.8v angle grinder. Great for cleaning arch bars. Saves your arms being overhead. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
