I'm looking for any advice and guidance on the possibility of using a carrier for my wife's mobility scooter as per attached link

With the Freely's weight limit of 150Kg I was hoping this may be a practical proposition.

Has anyone else used a similar set up, not necessarily for a mobility scooter, and if so, what are your thoughts\experiences.

Now, some years ago I had a jockey-wheel trailer. the jockey wheel was mounted underneath the trailer and the top of the trailer looked like a 1950's tubular roof rack. The jockey wheel had rubber suspension and a swivel drag steering arm. The coupling to the towbar was two 1" towballs about 36" apart. Really useful lightweight item.

I have a 4 bike carrier which mounts to the tow ball.
I was worried about the weight hinging so far out from the ball, but after using it a good number of times, I reckon the Freelander tow bracket is about as sturdy as it's possible to be. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

In UK you can only have up to 150kg, but in Australia it's a different story. Read this thread to the end, the car will be ok with 150kgs. https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic32855.html

Don't forget the car only has a 500kg payload, so a good chunk is gone with a lot of wait on the towbar. Additionally there is rear axle load to watch out for. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Hi,

have a look at motorcycle bike racks, I have been using one for 3-4 years now and have used it on 3 different cars, many trials bike riders use these and when you look at them they can look very light weight but work well.
My trials bike weighs 90kg
Only thing I would want to research is the distance from the towbar to outer edge of rack to work out leverage affect to the load

I restrict front to back flex with a strap from handle bar to roof rail, left to right flex is not an issue

Have a pic of the rack and bike on our L494 which had a removable hitch which I will try to add

But its now gone way up Norf

Like the idea of a castor type wheel. Another one that could perhaps be adapted.

I think it’s aimed at people who can not reverse a trailer, also not sure but do they count as a trailer on French tolls so can be used free. There is a firm in france that makes them and hydra tail in Uk, think the French one is the dearer of the 2

I must admit, these castor based solutions are a bit £££.

I already have a 6ftx4ft 4 wheel trailer, but bit big for what I need.

Was looking for something smaller that wouldn't take up so much space when trying to park in country areas.

Seen these which might be something that could fit the bill. They can come with castors which allow it to stand on end away from car.

We currently have a car transportable (it disassembles) scooter for my wife, but are looking at a more rugged semi all terrain one. It wouldn't fit in car, especially as we now have a Labrador taking the boot space.

The model we are looking at is about 115kg.

With the towball carrier, it weighs 7 kg and can carry 120kg, which it was why it was an option. I was really concerned at having that weight hanging of back of car, which is why I was looking for people experiences.

The small trailer is the more obvious option, but more bulky when out and about and storage.

This is my dilemma.

Final option is ditch FL and buy a van  Andy

I wouldn't worry about 150kg on the rear of a FL2 - I really wouldn't.

I deliberately weighted the caravans to have 140kg acting on the tow hitch to stop the van from pitching when being towed - stops a very travel sick wife from ruining the interior of the car.
The Ewok really didn't like that sort of weight despite being rated for it, and the DS is as happy as the FL2 was. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

In Australia we can have up to 350kg on the towbar. We don't tow but with all the equipment we take, 500kg. Actually the car is even move comfortable to drive with the extra weight onboard, mostly towards the rear.

With 150kg off the back you will be transferring a bit of weight from the front axle to the rear axle plus the 150kg.

The car will be perfectly ok with the mobility scooter. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
