what I particularly like is I just did the gocompare thing anyway to see if anywhere is cheaper, the price for Hastings came up as the best for me, then 2 days later they quoted me my renewal figure which was EXACTLY the same as the comparison site...

I wish insurance was that cheap down under. I am on the maximum 60% no claim bonus with $650 excess. I does include Land Rover accessories in the insurance like roof rack, mud guards, door strips, window weather shields & seat covers, but not the likes of air compressors I have in the car, au$1,600.00 Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Trust me some of us are paying a bit more - £641, maximum no claims, no additional stuff fitted, but it is insured for work use. £650 excess.

To be precise in whole au dollars from 2014 for a private owner (non business) 2021 $1,607 2020 $1,417 2019 $1,241 2018 $1,136 2017 $1,191 2016 $986 2015 $949 2014 $934 Currently 0.76 pounds to the au dollar, but let's say on an average roughly about 0.6 pounds to the au dollar over the years. So 1607 x 0.6 = £964 Then we have third party people insurance. Can't even register the car without this, au$490 (x 0.6 = £294) & I had zero demerit driving points loss for speeding etc, otherwise this goes up substantially. Car registration $547 (x 0.6 = £328) Registration certificate au$42 (x 0.6 £25) I haven't paid for breakdown road service (some may say that is a high risk with a LR) for the last few years, but that was over au$300 (£180), probably close to au$400 in 2022. So £1791 to keep a fully insured car on the road. Not to forget an annual mechanical service including a modest average amortised replacement like brakes. Let's say £500 So let's say down under equal to £2300 minimum to keep a car on the road fully insured (good driver), road service, no major maintenance issues. This would be pretty typical for a typical medium value car. Let's not get onto building insurance & we are not even in a flood or fire zone! I have spent au$2500 on dashcams to help protect my insurance. I have the cash. This is where it has got to down under. A car battery in Australia is over $300 for a Freelander, also an all terrain (single) tyre for a Freelander (+$500 in the outback). Petrol is cheaper than UK, but it is well & truely made up for everywhere else to maintain a car. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device! I think many people in the UK go for a higher excess than yours in order to keep the premiums down (mine's about 1000AUD), as unless its a big claim it is not worth claiming as it puts your premium up for years to come even if you have a protected NCD. Jules |

Yeah my daughter is in Victoria, Australia - running a car over there is expensive. Petrol is cheaper but their annual mileage is way higher. Jules |
