The mistake people make is throw in the towel once they experience big repair bills!
Cars (all cars) will eventually need components replacing and typically it always seems the most expensive ones Censored
However, once done with 2 year parts warranty (if using genuine parts) it should give piece of mind.
Imagine how much more you will spend to buy another car/vehicle and maybe that vehicle may also need bits doing.
Maybe its a case of better the devil you know!
My personal thing is to keep vehicles for at least 5 years (sometimes more).

Two of my cars had them for 18 years each. Earlier in life they had their mid life crisis. Then got rid of them due to late life crisis before it actually became a crisis.

The biggest cost of any car is the capital expenditure. About $30,000 depreciation to date for our Freelander. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

About £12k depreciation for my 2014 FL2 over 7 years - pretty good considering my 2009 BMW had lost £14K in its first year by the time I bought it. Jules

Depreciation is a Censored !
However, it seems the main depreciation occurs in the first 3 yrs (ish).
So either buy a car older than 3 years or accept your lot.
The only vehicle that made money was my defender td5. Brought it in 2013 for £12500 and sold it in 2021 for £16500 having put over 80k on it during that time Very Happy

My previous car, which was bought new, although I didn't pay list, lost roughly £37k in 2 years and months.

Yes it had a lot more tech and was considerably quicker. But I don't worry about the landy anywhere and has so far cost me a service (£220) and a set of new tyres (at 1/3 of the price of the old cars tyres for a set).

Depreciation is horrible and I'm honestly glad to not be dealing with it at the moment. Albeit, until the next car.

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Loire Blue

I had a 2008 HSE ON 150K that needed very little in my ownership as prev owner jad done the majority of work (it had 15k of receipts with it)

So, in January i upgraded to a much newer 2014 FL2 XS and in these two months, its needed:

Clutch, DMF and Slave £1k all in parts and labour inc IRD oil change
Bootlid handle £15
Rear wiper motor £70
Back brakes;discs, pads, sliders, caliper carrier £150
Front brake caliper sliders £20
Wiper linkage repairs (nylon bush failures) £30
Clutch pedal assembly: £50
Clutch master cyl: £120
Door actuator £25
Paint for grills :£50
I have also been derusting the car, painted front subframe and will shortly do the rear to preserve it.

I would say much of these has been down to prev owner only doing basic servicing and reactive repairs, so im hoping my investment staves off any further horrors.

Up next will be a haldex and diff service as the prev owner didnt know when it was last done. Timing belt thankfully is already done though! 2014 Metropolis in Loire Blue

2014 TD4 XS in Loire Blue (Sold)

2007 HSE in Black (Now gone!)

Just a bit of light humour for a Monday. I guess you could say I've learnt just how expensive FL2's can be. Here is my FL2.

First on the list of things to go wrong was the Gen 4 Haldex with worn out plates which was £1,200 to replace.

While that was done, the lovely people at FreelanderSpecalist.com happened to notice the left and right hand track rod ends boots were cracked, the hand brake cables outer casing was cracked exposing the cables, the front and rear crankcase seals were leaking and required replacing and the PCV valve was leaking. If that wasn't bad enough, we had noticed the clutch was starting to slip. So, you know, while you're in there, why not replace the clutch, dual mass flywheel and the slave cylinder. Laughing Oh and the timing belt was overdue needing to be replaced just to top it off.

I'm curious as to why you'd spend £1200 on replacing a £100 clutch pack in the Haldex, when you can get a guaranteed reconditioned complete Haldex unit from Bell Engineering for £600?

Looking at the rest of the expenditure suggested by this "specialist" it looks like someone is making some decent money off your back. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.
2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Gone.
2006 Tonga Green i6 HSE. Gone.
Audi A5 convertible, my daily driver.

The Haldex was somewhere in the region of £600 to £650. The £1200 was including removal of the old one and installing of the new one including sundries. Smile Other than Bell and FreelanderSpecialist.com, I was getting quotes for £2500 for a haldex replacement! Shocked

FreelanderSpecialist.com are by no means cheap. When it comes to jobs that you don't trust your average garage with, I'd prefer to pay that little extra and have it done right the first time. Very Happy Plus Bell have a 6 year waiting list to have work done and we needed it fixed before then. Laughing
