Just a bit of light humour for a Monday. I guess you could say I've learnt just how expensive FL2's can be. Here is my FL2.



First on the list of things to go wrong was the Gen 4 Haldex with worn out plates which was £1,200 to replace.





While that was done, the lovely people at FreelanderSpecalist.com happened to notice the left and right hand track rod ends boots were cracked, the hand brake cables outer casing was cracked exposing the cables, the front and rear crankcase seals were leaking and required replacing and the PCV valve was leaking. If that wasn't bad enough, we had noticed the clutch was starting to slip. So, you know, while you're in there, why not replace the clutch, dual mass flywheel and the slave cylinder. Oh and the timing belt was overdue needing to be replaced just to top it off. While the work was being done they also noticed the hand brake levers were sticking and needed to be freed and the pipe across the top of the engine was cracked and needed replacing.

Goodbye another £2,800.

We then put on a new set of tyres and had the tracking adjusted. Goodbye another £280

Just when we think we are now set, the throttle body decides not to be a throttle body any more, another £113 gone.





All this is less than 2 months of ownership. So go on, place your bets on what's next to give us trouble? My guess is the PTU.

At least you know these bits are going to be ok I am 2 weeks in to a newer 1 and waiting for things to happen . 2009 FL2 S now gone

I suppose you'll need to weigh up the repair costs along with
the purchase price, to see how it all pans out, DAVE.

No consolation I know but that throttle body cost less than a full tank of fuel

I have owned mine five years done over 40k in it and only had a headlight bulb go ! think I have been very lucky. 2013 FL2 XS.

Our FL2 has cost a bit more this year - now approaching 8 years old

"A" service £92
MOT £30
Replaced cambelt, water pump and FEAD belt £158
Drivers door actuators £8
And yesterday the tailgate microswitch failed. New switch/handle ordered £20

Obviously the labour is my own but I cant complain at the cost of parts.

The only outrageous parts cost I've come across is the glove box damping device - I mended mine with a hot glue gun rather cough up a ridiculous sum for a non essential part.


I'm changing both diff lubes and servicing the haldex later this summer, when I can get access to the ramps on the farm next door. Jules

So that damper may also be made or used in a different LR model. Why, I say that: the original was broken when I bought the vehicle and first changed the cabin filter in very late 2019. The original was totally black; the replacement from the LR parts was light grey and black but , IMO, was not as 'strong' as the original.
I tried looking for the receipt but I guess I did not catalogue it as I can't find it. So, there actually might be another model of LR that shares a very similar part but could be a lot cheaper? Dunno, but what they want for the original damper now could give any customer a coronary.

Am I right in thinking it's the one used in the Mk3 Mondeo?

That's the way we are looking at it. All the bits that have been fixed are good for another 10 years or when it rusts away, whichever comes first.

It was brought through a sole trader. Money is in a way irrelevent when you weigh up how much fun can be had in these. We had done our homework before buying one and knew things could get expensive. We just didn't expect all the expensive bits to pretty much come at once.

If she can tolerate the price of fuel to run an FL2 then parts prices are now irrelevant.

That's actually a really crazy thought at these crazy times. I hadn't really thought about it like that.
