ANTI FREEZE TESTER

Just bought the Sealey disc type tester. Now excuse me for sounding a bit thick, ( don,t answer that ), but the limited instructions state measuring the strength shows by how many discs float. Now does that mean more discs less strength or visa versa. Confused

Thanks for that. Still confusing though. Guy says read off the discs at the bottom. ie third one up but then goes on to say count the ones that are floating for the correct reading.

You are the first person I've come across who does this.
Does anyone else measure the antifreeze SG ?

I just change it every few years (JLR says 10 years) but I'd do it sooner as you have to change the Cambelt at 7years in the SD4. Jules

Yes, i do.
Goes back to a Disco 1 with a small leak which took ages to find.
We do get temps below freezing although not so bad for the last few years.
I test regularly and keep the AF good to -10C.
Being old fashioned and brought up to check oil, water(AF), windscreen fluid once a week i still do it, Jim A

Anti-freeze is not just to stop the coolant from freezing, it has corrosion inhibitors. So topping up with water dilutes the corrosion protection. Always use diluted anti-freeze of the correct strength.

The reason that you change it every few years is not because it no longer protects against freezing, it's because the corrosion inhibitors become less and less effective.

As a side note, screen wash, when bought ready diluted is made up with regular screen wash and de-ionised water, why? In soft water areas, adding water to concentrate promotes algae growth in the reservoir = dead pumps. In hard water areas, using concentrate and water leads to blocked jets.

And yes I do check mine every week, it's a habit thing. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Sussed it now folks. Daft really and obvious once i had taken more notice of the video. My old fashioned tester only read in numbers and was instant. Disc type takes a couple of seconds to settle. Anyway thanks for the input everyone. One positive result of the forum is it gets you away from watching rubbish on tv like call the midwife. Very Happy
