I have had a few FL2s and the throttle body always makes a whining noise for a few minutes when you switch off. Sometimes its a few seconds and other times 5 minutes or more. I would leave it alone and live with it. I have only had one fail and need replacing. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

They do make a noise after engine switch off, Its resetting its self.

The TB is supposed to have a calibration routine run, after a replacement is fitted. Mine had be replaced before I got it, but I had a dip in power as I changed gear. However after I ran the calibration routine using SDD, the dip in power on the gear change went away, so presumably the uncalibrated TB wasn't opening fast enough, when power was required after I'd changed gear. The throttle body on a diesel should only come into play when you stop the engine when it closes to restrict air to the engine, stopping the engine from running running on if it fuels itself from excess oil. It doesn’t play any part in the fuel to air ratio in a Diesel engine as it does in all petrol fuelled engines. |

No, my 2007 TD4’s throttle body wines and clicks as the flap resets once the engine has stopped, and has since I bought it. |

Thanls all ...I agree , Yes a whine is normal with a few clicks for a few seconds after shut down, but mine is making rather more nose than that albeit randomly than that normal bit, I have no engine run on ..and all seems OK apart from noise ...but just was going to replace to avoid any break down ... still not 100% weather need to be set up on LR diagnostics system TBH ... |

Some code readers have the option to reset the TB. On the other hand some people have said it resets it's self over time. |

It's the grinding and loud clicking noise that means it needs replacing, rather than the whining noise after shutdown which is normal.

ok all thanks for help fitted replacement and all seems fine did not do any resetting at all just fitted and started engine ..runs OK no noise ...taken old one apart and yes the gear had stripped as thought... |

The TB's primary function on a diesel, is to ensure that EGR function is enhanced under light running conditions, in which case it will close to restrict fresh air intake, thus enhancing the amount of exhaust gasses in the intake. It's secondary function is to smooth engine running between gear changes, by closing off momentarily as the throttle pedal is snapped shut. It also closes on engine shutdown, to reduce the vibration caused by the high compression a diesel has. Shutting the throttle to prevent running on in a runaway condition is a minor consideration, and definitely not the principle reasons, it's more of a byproduct of the other reasons for its existence described above. My throttle body failed one evening after making grinding noises for weeks. The nice man from the AA rammed a big screwdriver through the butterfly - so it was permanently open. Ran like this for weeks until I eventually got around to changing it, the thing that surprised me was the car ran perfectly with a non-functioning throttle body. Now mine was an auto so possibly didn't need the air to be shut off during gear changes.

The main reason the TB is there, is to improve functionality of the EGR circuit, the other benefits (reducing NVH) are of minor consideration, and to most normal people, the engine would seem to run just as well without it.
