after getting stuck in the mud on the weekend i have decided to get some decent tyres

i am looking at Maxxis Bighorns; has anyone any experience of these ? ie noise;wear and fuel consumption

Are you looking at getting them purely as a 2nd set for when you go off roading, or are they to replace your every day tyres ?

If it's the former, then go for it.

If it's the latter, then I'd advise going for a decent set of All Terrains instead.

MT's wear very quickly on the road, coupled with the noise, vibration and fuel consumption, the very points you are asking about. I have no direct experience of Maxxis Bighorns BUT have a lot of experience with MT tyres over the last 30 years.
Yes, they made my Land Rovers look the dogs danglies, but every journey was a chore, you were deafened (even more so than normal in my Defenders) , it always felt like you were driving on corrugated roads.
In my Freelander 1's, the vibration would resonate through the rollcage and at certain speeds, make you feel nauseous !
Obviously this is an extreme symptom due to having a roll cage, but regardless, it's very tedious listening to a loud hum, vibration or the sound of something akin to the sound a flat tyre depending on actual tread pattern, which makes even short journeys very tiresome.
Oh, and the noise and vibration can also disguise other issues like wheel bearing noise etc...

BF Goodrich all terrains quiet on road excellent off road will give very good milage not cheap but then the best never is always had these on my Defenders Wife takes the horse trailer in muddy fields with two big horses on board never gets stuck and often pulls out lesser vehicles that have. 2013 FL2 XS.

As a Goodyear fan I ran the FL2 on Goodyear all terrains and MTRs, with three sets of wheels - one set for winter tyres.
Running a FL2 on MTRs is great off-road, but on-road they didn't like white lines above 60mph, the noise was amazing (well I liked it) blew a front transfer box which must have been grumbling for 100's of miles without noticing, fuel economy does take a noticeable drop.
Good news is when it rains heavily (driving between N.Wales and Manchester every day), they just point blank refuse to aquaplane, not such good news for the poor fools following close behind on a flooded M56.
Quite good in loose snow, OK in packed snow, rubbish on ice.

More importantly they aren't rated for the speed that the car is capable of - this gives insurance companies an uneasy time.
Stick MTRs on a second set of wheels and use them for off-roading, for everyday use ATs are a much better bet. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
