My 2013 HSE Lux has the bling 19" wheels and I'm wondering if to swap the GY Wranglers (which have only done around 5000 miles) for something better suited to snow and ice. Yesterday I was on a road with badly compacted snow and whilst the car goes OK in a straight line it tends to slide sideways. Also when you brake (I try control the vehicle with engine as much as possible with the engine/gears but there comes a point where you have to hit the brakes eventually) the car skids quite badly. I realise proper winter tyres are the way to go but for the number of times it's needed, and a lack of storage, a spare set of wheels isn't ideal. The new CrossClimate 2 get rave reviews and technology doesn't seem far off a true winter tyre now.. but the speed rating isn't as recommended for the car.
Any ideas or recommendations? If I swapped to a different all season tyre would things improve much?

all tyres are a compromise somewhere !

dont forget true Winter rated tyres are NOT just for snow is when the temp is below 7 degrees, cold, wet, icy.

All season tyres that are 3mpsf stamped are a good compromise for most UK conditions and drivers

but really you want a set for summer performance (1) a set for winter (2) a set for gentle off road or laning AT's (3) a set for serious off road (4) and dont forgot a set for sand driving if you go on the beach (5) you can never have enough tyres

before I sold our FL2 I was looking at Yokos or ggat3's both all terrain and 3mpsf

Thank you for the replies. Yes the Goodyear Vector Gen 3 seems to get really good reviews and seems a good option for this tyre size (and correct speed rating). I wonder if anyone has gone from the Wrangler to the Vector and can compare?

I also understand there's no perfect tyre and it's all a compromise. I think my question really should be - has anyone found an all season tyre which performs noticeably better than the Wrangler in snow & ice?

I can't figure if H speed rated tyres are manufacturer approved or not. I believe going against manufacturer approved speed ratings invalidates the insurance. The size is 235/55 r19 , and it seems V rated speed is the norm and is stamped on the door panel for this size. Black circles and other sellers recommend V rated tyres and above. However the handbook mentions both H and V for this size. I emailed LR who today replied with 'in regards to your query, I can confirm Michelin Latitude Tour HP with a speed index of 101/H have been tested by Land Rover and are recommended tyres.
If you wish to use another type then this is your decision however, above is the recommended for the Michelin brand. '

So conflicting info on speed rating for this tyre size!!

Find me where that is written in your policy docs

Not saying some insurers won't have some clauses that might be a bit dickish, but H is still faster than this car can go, and every winter tyre and AT tyre I have found for the FL2 is H rated or lower.

ABI asked all their members to not be numpties about tyres a few years back after a couple of untrained call centre types made up their own rules and started telling folk that winter tyres would invalidate their policies. Apologies and compensation to customers ensued..... Current driveway contents:

While this document is specific to Winter tyres, the principle applied by most insurers is the same on other tyre variations.

As said, some insurers may have specific terms that forbid absolutely anything, but they would struggle to make that hold up if the tyres are suitable for the type of vehicle and use they are put to. Manufacturers change tyre brands and specs willy-nilly depending on what is available in the market at the right price. The key points are load rating - you absolutely should NOT use a tyre that is under your rated axle weight) and speed rating. There are many D3/D4 drivers out there on Q rated MTs with no problem whatsoever PROVIDED they aren't driving in excess of that speed (99MPH).

Plod and VOSA would also accept these as being suitable/roadworthy. Current driveway contents:

I see - interesting stuff - you obviously know or have researched a bit about the legal side. I just don't trust insurance companied, any excuse to wriggle out of a claim! Hence the caution. I haven't contacted the insurer - the young lass or lad on the phone won't have a clue what I'm on about and will just say to stick with the manufacturers recommended I'm sure.

Used to be Head of Complaints for one of the UK's largest insurers. Have since done consultancy roles for a number of banks, insurers and credit businesses and work with them to stop them upsetting the FCA, FOS, ABI and their customers wherever possible!

Have done various interesting gigs in gov, defence, nuclear and police as well, plus a bit of back-room stuff with some of the motor manufacturers, including Ford, Honda and Ineos.
