Had been planning on putting Michelin Latitude Cross on SWMBO's F2 but the 19" turbine wheels have prevented this. Plan B was then to find a good set of 17" or 18" rims to enable figment of the Michelins but that's drawn a blank too 🙄

Have now come across Falken Wildpeak A/T AT3W in the correct 235/55R19 to fit the turbines. There are a few reviews on tinterweb which all seem positive but I was wondering whether any of the forum members have any direct experience of these tyres please?

I’ve had them on mine at that size for 8 months or so and very impressed. Not too noisy, slight drop in fuel consumption, and great in the snow last weekend!

Dan - what sort of fuel consumption are you talking about? - we're getting 32-33 average at the moment. Also notice that you appear to have TPMS fitted? - I was under the impression that Freelander 2 didn't have that function? - if it does then I'd love be to know how to retro fit

It’s probably dropped about 2-3mpg. I used to see up to 40mpg on a run but now it’s late 30’s. Not much but just about noticeable!

It came with TMPS. It’s a very late one and I think 2014 models were fitted with it. No idea if it can be retrofitted, sorry!

Probably, it was only the very late 2014 built cars - effectively MY15 but actually the run out builds would have got TPMS as it wasn’t a mandatory thing until 1st November 2014.

I imagine that any remaining unsold cars without TPMS were pre-registered to Land Rover before finding their way to the dealerships to be sold after 31st October 2014 - effectively as used cars.

Talking of run-outs, do we have any Metropolis owners still…?


SOME INFO ON TPMS REQUIREMENT
Since November 2014, all new passenger vehicles sold in the EU must be equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

TPMS has been fitted to cars for many years but recently the mandatory fitment and maintenance of such systems has come into force. The process began with the introduction of legislation on 1 November 2012, whereby all new models of cars sold in the EU had to have a TPMS fitted. This was broadened out in November 2014 to include every new passenger vehicle being required to have a TPMS before being sold. In the UK on 1 January 2015, legislation came into force stating that for these vehicles, an inoperative or faulty TPMS sensor would result in an MOT failure.

I have a 64 plate Metropolis with TPMS as standard.
I've also got the Falken Wildpeak tyres and these are great - excellent roadholding and the added bonus of the snowflake symbol for winter use.
Done 10k miles on mine that were fitted to the car when I bought it in May.

Just got home after having 5 Yokohame Geolanders fitted along with a four wheel alignment.


Massive improvement, drives so much better.

Also have had rear suspension replaced, Sump replaced (leaking)all new brakes all round, along with front right drive shaft.

Wallet still whimpering but have a great car now., it's keeper along with my D3.

I had recently been looking into these Falken tyres as they’d been recommended to me by my daughter who works for a local chain of tyre shops. But as far as I can see they are only H rated for speed and my handbook says that the tyres should be V rated. And while I’ve no plans to be doing 149mph in my FL2, I think my insurance company would take a dim view of fitting H rated tyres.

Give them a bell - most insurers are fine as long as the tyre is appropriate size/weight for the vehicle.

For example, most winter tyres have a lower speed rating. My C-Class Coupe has a top speed limited at 155mph and usually has Y rated tyres (186MPH) yet my insurer is quite happy for me to run winter tyres that are H rated (130MPH)

But joking apart, I wouldn’t imagine there’d be any problem with lower rated winter tyres as most of them seem to be H, but All Season tyres are intended for use throughout the year and are readily available with V rating so perhaps more of an issue. But I might drop my insurer a line (a phone call isn’t a very reliable way of getting a definitive answer in such matters).

Reading Regulation 25, it seems to me that it applies only to goods vehicles, buses or trailers. Your reference to cars coming under item 1 in Table 25(3) seems incorrect as the Table only applies to vehicles covered by Regulation 25(2) and 25(3), i.e. goods vehicles, buses or trailers.

Furthermore, the speeds set out in Schedule 6 are the speed limits for certain classes of vehicles which don’t, at first glance, appear to include ordinary cars. But in any event, these are regular speed limits and not related to tyres.

But the issue isn’t, to my mind, a legislative one as I think it would be physically impossible to exceed the rated speed of an H tyre in an FL2 if indeed that would be an offence. Rather it is a matter of insurance companies requiring you to use the tyres specified by the manufacturer. In relation to fitting winter tyres FL2 handbook says:

“ If winter tyres are fitted to the vehicle, the tyre manufacturers instructions should be followed. Pay particular attention to instructions regarding the maximum speed that the vehicle can be driven, and the correct pressures for the tyres.”

This would, I think, allow you to use winter tyres with a lower speed rating than V, but presumably only in the winter. I don’t think you could argue that any All Season tyre, even if it has the 3 peak mountain snowflake symbol (which I think the Falken tyre has), is a 'winter tyre' if it’s being used all year round.

But I might ask my insurance company anyway, just out of curiosity, although I think I would prefer to stick to the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season (which are V rated) than swap to the H rated Falkens.
