Tony Dron 1946 - 2021 Motor Racer and Journalist

In my formative years, I used to enjoy reading about motor sport in the Motor magazine. Tony Dron was not only a good writer but proved he knew how to race by being very successful driving many different cars.

The Motor front page below shows the normal Dolomite (and a very attractive lady), Tony Dron went on to win lots of races in the Dolomite Sprint version of this car.

I obviously was influenced by his exploits as I later bought, and kept for 20+years, a Dolomite Sprint. It was very fast for its day, although I never thought for one minute that many years later I would be driving around in a Land Rover with the same acceleration and top speed as my Sprint. At the time my only experience of Land Rovers were of the 1960s models the RAF used, with all of about 70 - 80hp on a very good day, and tyres that had the tarmac grip of a wooden wheel.
