Brake Pads

Some of you may recall that in June last year when the car had it's first service at the local stealer Town & County Aberdeen, they informed me that my rear brake pads were 80% worn.

WRONG

Had the car in at Kwikfit this morning to have the brakes checked and was told that there is plenty of "meat" left on both front & rear pads.

Shame on you TOWN & COUNTY ABERDEEN for trying to rip off one of your customers. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Needless to say that I will be firing off a letter of complaint to the senior manager there Censored ______________________

i have to admit

i wish i asked for my brake pads to have a 2nd opinion before splashing out £340 on replacing them (not that my dealer would have done anything like that)

England 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Rimini Red

I was told at 45000 that the rear pads were 90% worn, when I replaced them mself this weekend they had 3 to4 mm left and the new ones are only about 10 mm thick so in fact they had 33% left.
I'm not a mechanic but it only took 40 minutes to replace thet rear pads from start to finish got them from Duckworth Landrover on E-Bay.

Brake pads should be changed when they have less than 2-3 mm material (less than 1/8 inch).
So, if yours have 3-4 mm, then they were right: 90% worn.

Similar to my expereince, all discs and pads changed at 45k service, was told they had 'some' meat left at that point but they would not make to 60k service. Not my call, the fleet folks said it was OK to change.

I commented to dealer that I thought 45k was somewhat low but was told 45k was the best they had seen. If I was a private owner I would have had more to say ... Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!

This is the first time I have had to have pads replaced on a car, I usually keep a car for 60 to 70 thousand miles, or 3 years, whicheve rcomes first, got 49000 on this one now and its 27 months old soi was a bit surprised at the brake pad wear.

I was in TnC yesterday.
Had a near catastrophic steering failure at the weekend. After a couple of little 'steering felt heavy' incidents the steering went totally solid coming off a roundabout and sent me into the 2nd lane (luckily I was on a dual carriageway).

TnC looked at it yesterday and phoned me last night to cheerily inform me there 'was nothing wrong' and that the tecnhician had done a visual check and could find no fault.
When I told the woman of my fear of basically having a major crash she told me to go out with a mechanic and describe the fault to them ?!?!
I told her if the steering went the mechanic would know and she said 'well you drive the car more than us, so you would recognise the little noises etc'
The prob is the fault is intermittent.

How should I proceed? I am terrified of the same thing happening on a country road at 60......

I would contact LR customer services as this could be quite serious and when it comes to something like steering you can't be too careful

It also highlights another problem, unless they witness the event they don't give a Censored

I had the same problem with my PDC, they wouldn't believe me when i said they was going off in the rain, until i took the car to them when it was doing it. They made me feel like I was making it up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I've emailed the general manager at T&C with my complaint and am waiting a response from him. I'll update here if and when I get a reply.

I understand your concerns Snappa, personaly I would refuse to take the vehicle back until they can assure you that there is no fault and that they would be willing to accept responsibility if a serious accident ocoured ______________________

Took technician on test drive yesterday. After 10 minutes no noise. I asked him to put car on full lock and it made hissing noise from pump area which he acknowledged and said he would investigate.
Got call from snippy woman this morning telling me car was fine and no fault had been found. She said the mechanic is denying he heard a noise apart from anyhting normal, and that I could pick up the motor as my steering was fine.

Spoke to cust liason guy who is investigating but has basically said, unless the steering fault occurs while in workshop, there's nothing we can do. I asked to have meeting with technician in his presence so I could ask him face to face about it and the guy starts going on about not having his staff harrassed!!!!!

Where do I go now? I am so Censored off with the whole LR experience, the motor has been in the garage more times in the last year that my previous German car in the whole 5 years I had it. Can't wait to get rid of this piece of Censored and LR's extremely poor customer service.

putting my steering into full lock does produce a slight hissing sound, maybe not to the same degree as what you have witnessed, but every power assisted steering car i have driven has done the same

I believe its a pressure release, and I have read somewhere leaving the steering on the full lock (holding the steering wheel as far as it will go) for extended periods whilst not moving will damage the system Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Yes that's true.
But this hissing sound has only just started. Plus when the steering went heavy it made the same sound.

I am getting no luck with LR. It may end up being the case I have to pay to have a new steering pump fitted for my own piece of mind.
What else can I do? Banging Head
