visual on xtrons unit

Has anyone in west of Scotland have an xtrons unit fitted i could get a look at.
Interested in fitting one.
BUT, would like to see one installed for a look see.
Just old fashioned about all that money.
Have read up everything i can but would just like a look at an installation.
Thanks Jim A

I’m a bit west of west of Scotland but this picture may help. To my mind it’s an excellent piece of kit (although it’s not without its niggles!) and looks like it was always there.

Thanks Simon, You're not that far west from us.
Would have been closer if the idiot down south had gone with the bridge.
Even the waste of money looking into the feasibility.
Anyway, i like the look of the xtrons. Lot of money.
I do use satnav occasionally, being an old guy i use maps and keep an up to date AA atlas in the car.
Although i do like the hands free phone connection.
Thank you for the photo Jim A

Does the XTrons unit accept dead reckoning from steering and speed as the LR system does? my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Jim,

Once you have Apple Maps or Google maps on a crystal clear, sharp screen you’ll wonder how you ever found your way around with a map! I love maps, and my daughter and I do vintage car navigation rallies with 1:50,000 OS maps, but for finding a hotel in a strange town, nothing beats a good sat nav!

I think the latest Xtrons with wireless CarPlay is superb. Get into the car with your phone in your pocket and in a few seconds up pops CarPlay. Brill!

The only snags I have at the moment are (a) the microphone has a very low volume on phone calls, and (b) the iOS 15 update on the iPhone broke the Wifi connection to my iPhone hotspot as Apple changed the encryption. Xtrons have been very helpful and have sent me a software update but this hasn’t solved the problems. This saga continues but as I can still use the Land Rover phone connection and I really have no need to have internet access for the Xtrons they’re not deal breakers for me. I’m sure we will get things resolved in due course.

I would say, however, that I wouldn’t be so impressed with it if it didn't have wireless CarPlay as the Android interface is pretty unimpressive.

Regarding price, if you sign up for email news from Xtrons at https://xtrons.co.uk/ you will get a 15% discount code. That brings the price of the PAQ70DLRL to about £300. I think it’s fair value for money.

Dartman the one, can you explain what you mean?

The LR sat nav will dead reckon in a tunnel when the satellites are lost, something I noticed when transiting Paris, despite changing direction a few times the display showed the cars position accurately in the correct lane, Though this facillity could also be calculated by accelerometers built into the head unit, but at £300 would doubt it. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I think we can safely say that the Xtrons unit doesn’t do that but the iPhone connected to it via CarPlay may well do something like this - I have no idea as we’ve no tunnels here in Norn Iron. But is navigation needed in a tunnel?

Having fitted a few " built in" sat nav units, I am under the impression that if the digital speed sensor is connected, the sat nav units use this measurement and " assumes" that you are still driving in the direction in which you are being directed, therefore you do not lose your position as with a portable sat nav unit.
The tunnels around Paris do in fact have junctions underground. If you were to deviate from your intended destination whilst underground, the inbuilt sat nav would have a shock when you surfaced and it realised that you were on a different road .......... recalculating .......when it picked the satellites up again.

Having used the LR satnav and a stand alone Garmin Nuvi side by side the Garmin had no idea where it was when exiting the tunnel and still hadn't updated before the sign posts, first time I did the Paris ring road tunnels in another make it was somewhat difficult to change lanes when suddenly finding we were in the wrong lane as the two lanes expanded to four. For general use in the UK not really needed but on the continent it makes it more relaxing my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I think I’d trade being able to virtually navigate in tunnels for the numerous benefits of Apple CarPlay. YMMV Very Happy

CarPlay upgrade

I would definitely go for this. I've got a VW EOS 3.2 (no relation!) and I recently fitted a Panasonic double din CarPlay unit which transformed my enjoyment of the car Previous
