Scotland 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey
after 6 months owership

2010 HSE auto
After 17 years of Disco 1 and Disco 2 we decided to move to a Freelander 2.
D2 bills were becoming a bugbear and all having to go to the garage, 80 in a week and cannot be bothered lying under cars.
Anyway looked at a few FL2,s and went for the one we own now.
FSH, big folder of invoices, cambelt and pump done, haldex overhauled, autobox oil changed and very clean
First thing was a health check by local garage who does a lot of work on FL2;s.#
Also took advantage of LR offer of engine oil and filter, health check, software update for £149.
Two good reports. 115k miles and was allowing for some things to go.
So far, Offside wishbone, bearing and cap top of offside suspension, corroded PAS pipe(quite common i believe).
Hopefully no more, car runs like a dream. Getting used to the FL2 and beginning to love it.
Will always miss my D2 auto. What a presence.
Fuel consumption is not as good as i expected. Overall at present is 25.6mpg.
Main reason is because of covid all my mileage so far has been short runs, 5 miles 10 miles odd 20 miles.
Actually did a 57 mile run on saturday and got it up to 29. Country roads and about 10 miles on dual carriageway.
On Saturday i have a 180 mile round trip to the Museum of Flight at East Fortune. Looking forward to it .
Enjoying this forum and very helpful, just like the D2boysclub.
Thats my thoughts and findings so far. I will report on my run come Saturday.
Birthday present from my daughter. Jim A

Hi Jim,
Good to hear the freelander is going well for you. Like you I continue to miss my Disco 2 they were (are) a marvellous landrover and a classic in waiting. I'd have a low mileage solid chassis example in a heart beat.
Had my Freelander nearly 4 years now and it's been brilliant. At 85000 miles now and plan to keep it for a long time to come. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I'd love to know how my old (2000 plate) TD5 XS D2 is doing - I can see it is MOT'd and taxed still.

I great car to do DIY on. I waxoyled the chassis inside and out and also underside of the bodyshell. Jules

Lovely cars without a doubt. Mine is around 25 - 26 around the town but went to York this year for a short holiday. Filled it up reset the trip for mpg & drove steady 70 all the way there & 39.7 is what the dash was showing so pretty happy with that.

Mine is 2014 SD4 HSE & so far so good, had the Cambelt, Haldex service, Auto fluid & axle oils changed along with all filters & engine oil changed when I bought it & it runs very nice.

Just put a new battery on along with the negative lead from battery to engine as having the drivers door not always unlocking when I stop, still not cured the door problem so guess I will need to fit a new lock mechanism at some point but its very intermittent so no hurry until next year.

Aim to keep this one as long as possible, I dont do many miles as have a VW Caddy as well which I mostly use around town. Much better on fuel & emissions are much lower. My car has only done 65000 miles so hopefully lots of life left in it yet. 2014 Freelander 2 HSE Orkney Grey. Now sold.

I keep pushing the escape button but I am still here.

Jim, I wish you lots of good driving in your FL2.

While at East Fortune, look out for the AI23 Display.
I am of similar age to you and now most things I have worked on are in museums.
In the early 1960s I used to work on this radar on a stand just like this.
I used to think of it as very futuristic, it had sub-miniature radio valves and analogue computing components.

Thanks all for the replies
Jules, my garage bought the D2. Knew a good thing, they had done all the work.
Just checked, passed MOT with one advisory, 145 k miles. I really looked after the car.
SWMBO wanted me to keep it, but as only one driver I let it go.
Will always miss her.
Blue boy, looking forward to the run and visit on Saturday.
Iain, yes will look for the radar bit
Thanks again Jim A

My fuel economy has been horrendous, but then last year 800km & this year, well actually 13 months 428km. A good number of those trips have been 12 metres. 6m to free up the garage & 6m to put the car back. The odometer counts forward in both directions! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Hi,

just keep using and enjoy it Thumbs Up

Our FL2 went Up Norf yesterday and we checked the trip computer before resetting it for him,
5400 miles ish since last reset with 28mph average speed and a 34.2mpg average and that include towing the tintent a few times and it hardly ever gets on a dual carriage way never mind a motorway.

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

Had mine a week...now back in garage where i brought it from.
However, this is due to them agreeing to change cam belt and water pump (genuine parts) but also because it went into restricted performance mode and it is due to split pipe which they are also doing all free of course Very Happy
So 7 days ownership, only 3 days with me Shocked

Update…
OnSaturday did a 160 mile round trip to the Museum of Flight at East Fortune.
First long run in 6 months.
Mostly motorway/dual carriageway.
Great run on way through, Heavy snow at museum, heavy rain, 20 minutes crawl on Edinburgh bypass.
Weather cleared on way home.
Car performed fantastic.
Overall mpg was 33. Probably without the crawl would have been a wee bit better.
Great day and recommend the Museum of Flight.
Cheers Jim A
