I thought I would post a debug write up for future Googlers .
The front windscreen wiper behaves differently from the rear. If you have access to the wiring diagram then read no further.
The wiper control , flick, intermittent, slow, fast are just signals to the ECU. It is the ECU that controls the wiper motor via two relays.
The wiper motor provides a park position signal that also feedback to the ECU.
The ECU energises either the slow or fast relay to apply power to the wiper motor. When it is indicated that the ECU should park the wipers, it will await the park feedback signal and then de energise the relay. i.e the wiper motor does not self park as the rear motor does.
This means that 12v only is fed to the motor when it is commanded to run.
This then leads to a diagnosis chain:
Doesn't run in any mode: Fuse , motor, earth fault, control switch, (or possible the ECU)
Does it run in slow but not fast? Yes could be relay, or motor (or potentially the ECU but that would be way down the list)
Does it run in fast but not slow, see above (different relay)
Elsewhere you'll find a great diagnosis check of swopping the fuse and relays with their neighbours.
My failure was intermittent failure , with the wipers stuck on the screen. Often turning off and on would fix the issue for a while. Run fine without the wiper arms attached. When failed , would not run in any mode , or park.
Replacement Motor Assembly fixed the issue.

I did a reset.


I imagine I will have to replace the wiper motor. Just wonder if you have the part number handy , and if it is a DIY job?

Pmabz - if your wipers park at 45 degree angle it could be you’re in ‘winter park’ mode. You can change this in your menu in setup. Not sure if your model has this feature.

I did the reset, which seems to have worked. Waiting on rain (!!!) to test.

No such menu on my 2009 TD4.

The motor is part of the larger arm control assembly. Easy enough to swap.
It is a brush motor, and I'm sure my failure was worn brushes. Changing the brushes doesn't look that easy, and you'd have to find some alternates to modify to size.

Wondering if anyone can advise where I can find the wiper relays and if they are user replaceable.
An excellent post and covers the fault I have.

My partners Freelander 2 TD4 2010 is only working on fast wiper, rear wipers and screen wash are ok.
I did try a replacement wiper stalk but fault still exists.
Apologies, I'm not a mechanic or auto electrician so just trying what I can. I was hoping the next cheaper of the steps may be wiper relay.

Any advice is much appreciated

I've managed to fix my issue.
In case it's of any use to anyone else, I found the relays labelled in the fuse box in the engine compartment.
I swapped R8 R11 (Front and rear wiper relays) and all started working again. I would never have tried this were it not for this post.

It's all happening at once with this car, remote now won't unlock very easy, I've seen the difficult job to replace battery
and rear boot switch is now not working, although can be opened remotely, again I've also seen I can buy the switch and wiring to replace that easy enough.

Yes the tailgate switch is nice and easy.

So I had a similar problem... wipers did not work in fast mode
Checked the motor, checked the stalk, checked the relays and fuses - as per this thread not of those
In the end I reset the ECU (disconnecting the live and earth terminals on the battery and shorting out to drain the capacitors) and voila... it worked!

I work in IT and the old cliche is 'have you turned it off and on again?' 60% of the time that will fix... looks like it could be the same for ECUs

The old battery trick sorts lots of things.

Worth bringing this to everyone notice as the bad weather approaches.
