Xenon hedlights

Do the newer FL2 come with xenon headlamps, my previous 2008 had candles for headlights, thinking of going back to a 2013/2014 FL2 but hoping headlights are better
Cheers

A much covered topic on here. Just search for 'headlights'.
Basically high spec later cars have xenons lesser models have halogens with the hb3 bulbs, search 'hb3' as well.
The hb3 equipped lights are Censored , there are aftermarket upgrade options . Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

The HB3 halogen version, in the lower spec late models, uses the same projector lens as the xenon/HID so an aftermarket HID
upgrade works well. There is plenty of space inside the light unit to the control boxes and wires.
Technically an MOT fail, but mine passed as the light beam is just as it should be, unlike some aftermarket LEDs that I tried before hand. Jules

The only cars fitted as standard with Xenon headlights were the MY 13 HSE Lux and Metropolis versions.
You will find the odd other cars with Xenon - if the spec was upgraded by the first owner - but few and far between.
My first Fl2 was a 2007 HSE and I was lucky with that one to have factory fitted Xenon.
I replaced the lights on my next one a 60 plate HSE - fitted original Xenon lights and had the car config file changed to enable them.
Quick way of telling looking at pictures of the cars - the switch panel to the right of the steering wheel has two roller switches, on either side for halogen headlights (manual height adjuster) and only the one on the left of the panel for Xenon equipped cars.

Be aware there is always some marketing lead confusion over Xenon bulbs which have a tungsten filament and Xenon gas inside the quartz bulb and genuine Xenon lamp systems which are actually Xenon gas discharge tubes (like on a camera electronic flash guns) with no filament and run off a controller delivering about 70+ volts and a few kVolt zap to a conductive film on the surface ignite them. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

My 2008 LR2 has HID headlights from the factory

I also own a Volvo S80 (the LR2 is based on the Volvo P3 platform)

My 2010 S80 also has candles for headlight

Actually it did have candles

I upgraded to LEDs

For HB3 here is a link to what I upgraded to

https://www.headlightrevolution.com/9005-H...quantity=1

I am very happy with these GTR bulbs

Note: the Volvo use reflector style headlight but if you have a projector style headlight then the bulbs should be even better.

My LR2 has the projector style.

Before the upgrade

LR2 - flood light bright
S80 - a candle is about right

After the upgrade

LR2 - flood light bright
S80 - also a flood light (equivalent to the LR2 HID but not objectively better)

Take care

Paul

No, not unless the first owner ticked the option box for them. And at over £800 per side on fleabay, it's really not worth it to swap them.
I've just put Novsight LED replacements in mine (recommended by someone on the FB FL2OG) which give the same beam pattern but are not really that much brighter than the HB3 Halogen. BUT...hopefully they'll last longer than the miserable life span of the HB3 bulbs. I've got the MOT on Nov 1st so I'll find out if they pass. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Some more information

Here are the Novsight LED vs stock (Note: the test is for H11 which is what I use in my S80)

NOVSIGHT (Projector Lens Headlight)

Here is the GTR Lighting Ultra 2.0 (This is what I upgraded my S80 Volvo with)

GTR Lighting Ultra 2.0 (Projector Lens Headlight)

The Novsight should be noticeably brighter than stock.

And the GTR Lighting Ultra 20. should be noticeably brighter than the Novsight.

Which is why I went with the GTR Lighting Ultra 2.0 for my S80

If my LR2 had Halogen headlight than I would get the GTR Lighting Ultra 2.0 for my LR2.

The Company that did the testing did compare the GTR LED to HID in a different video and the difference was very minor.

Take care

Paul

PS Here is the video (the first half of the Video is for Projector Headlight like your FREEL2 and the second half is for reflector Headlights like my S80)

Depends how you define brighter. Yes it's a brighter white light but what I meant was that the throw of light up the road wasn't significantly better than the Halogen. Could be that all my internal lenses need cleaning after being hit by several Halogen bulbs going bang. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Tiger,

Lets look at the XC60 (the LR2's sibling once removed, is that even possible?)

The IIHS started Evaluating headlight in 2016.

2017 XC60 Low Beam (Dip Beam)

Distance that illumination drops to 5 LUX curbside

Halogen 79.9 meters (262 Feet)

HID 96.0 meters (315 Feet)

2017 XC60 High Beam + Low Beam (Main Beam???)

Distance that illumination drops to 5 LUX curbside

Halogen + Halogen 167.6 meters (549 Feet)

Halogen + HID 144.8 meters (486 Feet)

Conclusions

1. For the stock Halogen light switching from the Main Beam (549 Feet) to the Dipped beam (262 feet) reduces the visible distance by 52%

2. The HID Main Beam (486 Feet) when switched to the Dipped beam (315 feet) reduces the visible distance by 35%.

3. Going from the Halogen Dipped beam (262 Feet) to the HID Dipped Beam (315 Feet) increases the viewable distance by 50 feet
