The 2nd hand CD player arrived this morning and is now fitted and has worked for well over an hour, so I'm assuming the problem is solved. Thanks again for all the help.

I never did find the missing bits and I did try a magnet, but it wasn't very powerful and wasn't successful.
However I called in at the local main agent in Pickering who GAVE me a clip and screw! I have used them and their predecessors for parts for my 1962 series 2 for many years now, and they have always managed to get any bits within a couple of days. They were, unfortunately, the people who quoted me £190 to put the FL2 on their machine!

I was surprised at how easily the dash came apart, once I'd found a video on You Tube showing someone doing it, and how easy it was to remove each component of the audio system, especially after talking to a couple of auto electricians and them clearly not wanting the work.

Hope nothing goes wrong now for another 5 years!

I also bought these plastic pry tools to gently remove the dash: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/263061951247

So the total spend was £57.93 made up of:

MOST loop £7.95
Pry bar set £9.99
Used CD unit £39.99

Like all these things I'm sure things could have been found cheaper if I'd searched around for longer, but I'm happy with that AND I get more tools to keep in my toolbox!

Now just got to clean my dirty finger marks off the top of the dash and the inside of the screen!!

Well I had a bit of time today so decided to take the offending item apart.
I suspect I have found the cause of the problem. Inside the CD player, circuit board to earth contact is made at a number of points using a double sprung metal strip. Where these touch the circuit board is a flat soldered area. This mechanical contact area is showing signs of corrosion - much the same as you get around battery terminals. I've tried to photograph these areas, but although you can see some corrosion, it's more noticeable in real life. But you get the idea, and no, I am not going to clean up the contacts and reinstall it!

Hi, these spring contacts are just for screening the case to prevent interference, and don't play any part in the normal functioning of the device. So I suspect your problem will be elsewhere.

(I'm an electronics tech in real life...)

Thanks for that - interesting! I hadn't considered galvanic action as the contacts are in a warm, dry environment. I should have thought about it, having had a series 2 for 40 years!

The faulty item is now residing mid way down our dustbin waiting for the next collection, while its replacement continues to work! (touch wood!)

Going to try this I’m having similar problems but mine is when I first start the car and I also get a bleeping sound when radio goes off 😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
