Thanks for all your suggestions. Since my original post, I've had the car checked out by an independent Land Rover specialist. The High pressure fuel pump, fuel injectors, a separate fuel supply set up, and duplicate common rail was set up .... to no avail.

My local Land Rover Official dealer admitted that they had no diagnostics for my car and no technicians trained up for it. Embarassed, and suggested I try elsewhere.

So, it looks like I'm stuck with a lovely Land Rover Freelander 2 that doesn't work! Big Cry Freelander 2 HSE. Santorini Black. Roof Rack, Running Board, Auto.

I once had something like this on my son's old Ford Fiesta, he bought it cheap as a summer runabout and I noticed that there was a new ignition coil and plug leads etc so there obviously had been a problem with it. He called me out one night as it had stopped and I went round waggling connectors as he tried to start it. Sure enough one was sensitive to being touched and we got it going.
Given the abrupt loss of power it almost sounds like a similar problem with this FL2 an intermittent bad connection somewhere that heats up slowly and closes some of the car's systems down. I presume that things like the locking mechanism, lights and radio are still working when it stops. I would be having a look at every connector I could find and squirting in some switch cleaner for a start, also I presume that you have monitored the battery voltage

PS another thought ,what about the throttle body ? Do you still hear the whistling noise for a few minutes when the car stops ? One of the throttle body's jobs is to stop the engine. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Hi Richard, after my first total shut done whilst driving it got recovered home, the next day it sprung back to life, i took it out for a spin and i to was get a total loss of power for a split secound then she just carried on as normal happend twice on the same day about 30mins apart. With it having no fault code i first thought fuel, so i ordered fuel filter and a crank shaft sensor (bosch) just to have that base covered. So far so good i will give it a few more miles and add to this thread.. hopefully it might help others like use. 👍

@Leesansom, your description sounds like typical CPS beginning to fail. As you have already changed it, I can’t imagine you’ll have anymore problems with it. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

@badger51 done a further 80miles today and all good, only had the car 3 weeks couldnt believe it. With there not showing a Management light it still makes you wonder was it the issue. I have read that some dont for some reason or another, mine would be a stab in the dark problem. Its my first landrover freelander ever so you could imaginewhat i was thinking. Love the car though. Thanks for the reassurance mate. Appreciated.

Hello Sid. Sorry for the delayed response. I'm now back on the case. I changed the Crankshaft position sensor last weeks. No joy, unfortunately. Thanks for your advice. Richard Freelander 2 HSE. Santorini Black. Roof Rack, Running Board, Auto.

Hi Lee, thanks for the advice. I'm having a last attempt to get my car to start, before I scrap it.

It's so annoying, as it sounds like it wants to start, but does not. No error codes.

Hello Sid. Sadly I have not been able to get the car going. Actually that's not quite true! with the help of a neighbour, who sprayed some COLD START into the intake box, the engine did fire up , until we stopped the spray. So, it does work with 'ether 'as a fuel, but not diesel. I've primed the fuel system, too. My diagnostic reader reports NO error codes. That said, I did a DATA STREAM on the COMMON RAIL Pressure sensor, whilst cranking the engine, and it report a pressure of 0.48 MPa. This I assume is 0.48 Mega Pascals, which is 480 KPa (kilo pascals) of pressure, which is about 5 atmospheres, a high pressure but not as high as it ought to be, which is up to 1200 Atmos, I understand. Maybe I'm getting my knickers in a twist .... and talking rubbish. So, I am thinking that may be there is a leak in the common rail, caused by who knows what - a faulty gasket, a faulty injector ( staying open all the time?) ... this is all a bit out of my depth.

Hello Badger21. Yes, I've changed the CPS. However, I haven't checked out the throttle body, as it looks a bit complicated. You are quite right that one job of the throttle system is to cut the engine ..... so it could be a stuck lever or a bad sensor or something totally different.

Cheers! Freelander 2 HSE. Santorini Black. Roof Rack, Running Board, Auto.
