Here is the result of the GLOVE TEST on my Volvo 3.2 2010 S80







Note: the PCV in my Volvo does make a very slight honk when first started but it isn't very loud. I can't hear it with the engine cover in place, in fact if I am listening to music or talking to someone I can't hear it. I do think that your recording is louder than what I am hearing but it may be temperature related.

If you can hear the Honk with the Engine cover in place and the Bonnet closed and you are in the drivers seat with the music playing at a very low volume then you need to fix something.

If not then you are being Paranoid.

Hi, Interesting noise! I would suggest a broken piston ring. I have a Volvo V70 T6 with 167k on the clock, and it only rattles a little after standing for a week. Definately pressure related somewhere. Before getting too paranoid, test the vacuum pump for vacuum, and also, if you have a vacuum tank, check the valves work. The other thing is the complex petrol breather system that releases fumes to the engine on a cycle at start up. Does your engine throw a fault code when running and the filler cap is opened? Petrol engines now usually do so. It is correct that too much internal pressure will force oil out, so will over filling the sump, these engines have a Volvo warning for that.

You did not mention if you bought an original PCV or aftermarket.


If the sound really bothers you then take the PCV off and put some motor oil in the area where the diaphragm is and let it soak then turn it over and drain that motor oil out. There is a Valve inside that is sticking and you want to lubricate it.

Note: I suspect that over time engine oil will get to the valve and the Honk should go away.

But if it bother you then take it apart and lubricate it.

I'll try lubricating the valve in the pcv first. I'll check the invoice but, I'm pretty sure I bought an oem rather than LR part.

I might be selling her soon so she needs to be right.

Sadly (sort of) my business is doing well and I've had to buy a pick-up. Not sure yet if I can afford both vehicles long term.

The Diaphragm needs to seal against the Brass cylinder.

If it doesn't seal, it sings or honks as you've discovered.

I've tried removing the whole pcv, leaving oil I'm the valve for a while the replacing it on the car. This didn't help.
Is there a safe way to remove the plastic cap over the valve without breaking it? Looks a bit dicey to me....

Called Britcar (supplying agent) sorted under warranty, new part should be with me by the end of next week!

I'm sorry i didn't get to post a cool fix for anyone else that has the same issue in future.

I got mine to HONK!!!


My LR2 is away with my daughter at University so I don't get to see my LR (or my Daughter).

But my daughter was home for a few days and I checked the LR.

By introducing a very small air leak into the Engine i was able to get the honk.

If I made the leak large then the HONK stopped.

To do this I did the following

1. lift the dipstick slightly but don't fully remove it

2. lift the oil fill cap slightly but don't remove

Bot of these locations has replaceable O-rings

Guess what I recommend what you do next?

I did replace the O-ring on my oil fill cap. I will look for the part number.

PS I know that you are planning to sell your LR and get a truck. If you are getting a FORD to replace your LR then I will do everything I can to help you get ready for the sale. However if you are getting a toyota, then don't tell me...........because I don't feel the same about toyota. (for reference I am certain that my 3.2 was built in the UK at a factory that has a big FORD sign at its entrance and I knew that my LR was using FORD parts when I bought it) I've owned many vehicles over the past 30+ years and none of them have been made by toyota.
