Back in the 60's I was into electronics and bought some of Sinclair's books of circuits using "micro alloy transistors" or MATs that he sold. I had great difficulty in getting his stuff to work. A friend then bought some of his Project 60 hifi modules and most of that didn't work either and had to be sent back for replacement. My first job was in the Plessey research labs and someone told me that Sinclair bought a load of reject semiconductors including IC amplifiers cheap as they were out of spec and was trying to find ones that worked and selling them on. It was all done on his kitchen table. He was certainly a character and a friend bought a Sinclair Scientific calculator for about Β£70 in the mid 70's (serious money) and the Black Watch. I eventually worked for ICL and had an OPD one per desk based on the ZX (which BT also tried to sell as the Tonto) but the microdrives were absolute rubbish and few customers actually bought one. What with the C5 I always wondered how he actually made any money. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
