Spare Wheel Roof Mounted

Found this today, the spare wheel is mounted on the roof, with strengthen plate between inner roof and headlining. Mounted around a roof rack.

Something different, I know its not going to be everyone's taste. Never seen that before.

There is no way I would do that.

Any weight on the roof needs to transferred to the parts of the roof designed to take weight. If one wants to lower the height, that's ok but still mount via the designed locations.

The reason I put the wheel at the front is the tyre stops all the bugs collecting on solar cells & fuel containers.

Also fuel container opening facing to the rear to further minimise bugs.

30kg of wheel is hard enough to get on a pair of cross bars & position, lot alone lowering it into a space. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Used to mount my spare on the roof on my Freelander 1 V6.
Not much room in the back with the roll cage and LPG tank !

Call me stupid but why not mount the spare on the back door of the Freelander 1? - there's a mount fitted for it.
We took the rear seats completely out of the FL1 and placed the second spare directly behind the passenger seat.

Got to admit that there is no-way I would mount anything heavier than a flashing beacon through the roof of any car. Yes mount a roof rack on the seams or the folded edges above the door where it's strong enough for the load. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

It was built as a rally car. Therefore the spare would "Normally" be strapped inside the vehicle. as per build regulations.
But if I wanted to go "off roading", then I'd fit my over sized MT's on, but that meant the spare was too big to fit in the same space as the regular spare, strapped to the roll cage.
Also, those MT's were too big for the door mounted spare wheel bracket in any case.

OP….the way that spare is mounted could cause problems with fretted paint, it would take long for the rubber to rub away at the paint on a long journey, not a good idea….let alone the issue of weight on an unsupported structure. Regards
