From memory the tailgate should have 2 plastic inserts that you would screw a self tapper into for mounting the number plate. |

Many thanks. That’s what I was hoping to hear. The trouble with using the sticky pads is that they grip instantaneously and if you haven’t got the plate absolutely correctly positioned you’re screwed! |

I’ve had mixed results with Velcro Heavy Duty Tape and even if it sticks satisfactorily to car and plate, it leaves the plate susceptible to being nicked. From that point of view the sticky pads are probably the best but it’s hard to get the plate perfectly aligned before the pads make contact whether you start with them on the plate or on the car. |

I used 6mm double sided tape which was deep enough to cover the 2 plastic strew tabs. Worked just right for me |

Thanks all. I’ll take the plate off but have a couple of yellow screws to hand (and maybe some double sided tape ). |

My plate was stuck on with sticky tape, behind it were just two hexagonal holes - no plastic things to screw into. I had to make my own, by modifying some plasterboard rawl plugs. Jules |

Hmmm … that could be a bit messy. I’d better have some tape handy before I remove it. |

When we replaced the plate on ours the original had been stuck on the double sided and it was a total mess, the two holes were there in the metal but the inserts had gone, I found a couple of rawlplug type wall plugs that fitted nice and tight and just used the normal plate screws, worked a treat. Regards

Thanks. I think I’ll get some double sided tape/pads to have to hand when I take it off in case the threaded inserts are gone. The last time is used the sticky pads on a plate I ended up with it slightly crooked. Less chance of that using screws. |

Something like this would sort you out but you would have to remove the interior trim I think.

Thank you. That was the sort of thing I had in mind but assumed the nuts would be retained in some sort of holder on the outside of the tailgate. This picture of a tailgate for sale on fleaBay would suggest there are, or should be, two plastic fittings (the white ones) for some sort of screw to fit into.
