There is a piece about it here, albeit thin in detail:
https://media.landrover.com/news/2010/08/l...eelander-2

"Revised transmissions boost efficiency

A second generation Asin Warner AWF21 automatic transmission helps improve efficiency and emissions with a number of improvements. The Torque converter lock-up works over a wider range improving comfort, fuel economy and driveability, while optimisation of internal components reduces weight and inertia for faster shifting. The gear train has been improved with low drag torque friction plates, taper roller bearings and optimised components for greater efficiency. Transmission efficiency is also improved by a switch to low viscosity automatic transmission fluid, while the new control system is faster and has been reduced in weight.

The most significant change is the advanced neutral control logic which reduces drag when the vehicle is stationary, the engine at idle and Drive selected. While not actually selecting neutral, drive load is substantially reduced to save fuel and improve refinement. The calibration of the transmission has been revised by Land Rover engineers to reduce torque converter slip. It retains Land Rover's Terrain Response features, CommandShift® and adaptive shifting and is available on the TD4 and SD4 Freelanders but not the two-wheel drive eD4."

That information refers to the MY 2011 update. I'm not sure, but I think that things changed a bit again with the final 2013 onward models. Specifically this: "advanced neutral control logic which reduces drag when the vehicle is stationary, the engine at idle and Drive selected. While not actually selecting neutral, drive load is substantially reduced to save fuel and improve refinement".

I suspect that at a minimum, a software change was made so that the transmission DOES select neutral when idling in Drive, hence the problems that some cars have had when pulling away from standstill after idling that required a TSB and a software update. Anyone know more?

Has anyone got any advice on Febi Biltstein ATF - FEB29934 - seems it is a mineral oil with specific JWS 3309 standards?
(as apposed to a "universal synthetic" type...)
Thanks

hi what type are you using the nearest I can find on their site is jws3309 which I thought was for the gear boxes upto 2010. I have a 2012 model and the fluid for that is jws3324. GS Sd4 2012

The later gearbox features an improved ability to remain “in gear” at idle when (say) you are waiting at lights. Hence a “thinner” fluid. The earlier box does not like too much waiting in gear at idle.

How do I find out which auto gearbox I have its a 57 plate 2008 version. I have decided on getting a transmission fluid change and was just considering the JWS 3309 until I started reading about the JWS 3324?
