Freelander 2 (2008) Rear Sub Frame

Hello, I have a dilemma; My trusty Freelander 2 has failed it's MOT on a rotten rear sub frame. Big Cry Second hand rear sub frames are as rare as hens teeth. Annoying as the engine / gearbox and drive train are all fine. Does anyone know anywhere to buy one and how easy it would be to fit at home or is it a garage job? If the rear frame has gone should I replace the front as well? Or should I just cut my loses and sell it for scrap/break it? Question

Expensive new but worth it if the vehicle is worth saving at least with a new one you know its solid, would need to have all the bushes as well. not that difficult to fit at home. front sub frames normally last longer as they get covered in oil leaks

I have a complete rear subframe from a freelander. It had a gen4 haldex diff in it, so probably off a 2009/10 vehicle.
Willing to sell.
I’m in Cardiff, but can easily palletise.

I have a 2013 FL2 and it definitely has a Gen 3 haldex.

My sisters 08 has just failed it's MOT on the rear subframe so we too are in a bit of a dilemma Sad

New subframes are out of stock and stupidly expensive at £1200 OE part only - there are no 3rd party options. The vehicle is well used, done 175k and has rust inside both rear doors, (that has gone through on the nearside). The garage estimated £2k to replace it (if/when they can get one) which is a fair price, but not sure it's worth it. If I could find a used subframe, I would look at doing it myself, but not had any luck there.

Is this a common problem? The garage advised against going and buying a replacement FL around the same age. I have an 07 (only done 76k) and the subframe has surface rust all over it, but otherwise it looks ok. Maybe I need to do some research and start crawling under the back of every FL2 I can find Smile

I don't know if welding it up the subframe is an option? I've not looked at it yet to see where it's rusted out.

They do Look similar the rear frames for Freelander and Evoque,
I reckon at around £125 second hand it would be worth a punt,
all you need is a friendly Evoque owner who'll let you take some measurements. DAVE.

The first evoque essentially used the freelander 2 floor pan and running gear so it's a fair bet that the subframe is the same. I'd want to take measurements though to confirm before buying one. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Just looked this up on

https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/p...and-rover/

As far as I can see there are 5 different LR codes for the rear cross member depending upon VIN.
I dont know what are the differences. Jules

Thank you for your help!

We have spoken to the MOT tester, and he said they can only test what they can see - so if the weld is good, then it can pass, however there is likely to be further corrosion he can't see, so ideally it should be replaced. I've attached a couple of pictures, it looks like its corroded from the inside of the original seam weld. I think it should be fairly accessible to repair once the exhaust is removed, and hopefully the welder can find some good metal to cut back to.

The Evoque 2012 subframe looks nearly identical, apart from it has an additional weight bar at the back: https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/l...24B040210A

A friend turned up in a borrowed 2007 FL (her car is in the garage) and that had surface rust, but generally didn't look as bad as my sisters.

I'm going to be getting some waxoil on mine before the winter!
