United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Orkney Grey
What Dash Camera.

I have searched on here & found some information regarding dashcams but I would like to ask about peoples experience with the different models available.

I had a cheap dashcam (£25) in my 2007 Freelander & it just sat there & always did what it was supposed to do. I have decided to put another in my 2014 Freelander & maybe spend a little more for better quality video & hopefully better coverage when its parked, saying that there seems to be so many variables on that one feature alone, some work well some dont & its really a bit of a minefield.

The problem is double edged in that I dont mind spending the money on a really good one but I dont want the car broken into so they can steal it because of its value so I am thinking stay fairly cheap, yes I can take it out of the car when I leave it but whats the point in that as the idea is to leave it to protect your car.

I looked at the Garmin 67W & also the Next Base 522GW. The 522GW can be purchased as a package with the rear camera as well for around £180 which is ok but will it just encourage breakins to my car. I like the 2 models I mentioned because they are very small & will mostly tuck behind the mirror on the windscreen. Unlike my cheaper one in my old car which was fairly large.

Anyone who can advise over this would be very useful because at the moment I am really not sure what to do. Thanks for any help anyone can give me. 2014 Freelander 2 HSE Orkney Grey. Now sold.

I keep pushing the escape button but I am still here.

The Garmin mini2. Early indications is that they have solved the over heating issues which some were having. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Yes I heard about the overheating issue. Good they may have sorted it out. The Garmin is very small. 2014 Freelander 2 HSE Orkney Grey. Now sold.

I have a (front Camera) Nextbase 522GW, which which has provision for a rear window mounted camera to be plugged.
It comes with apps to download and view on laptop or mobile.
https://www.nextbase.com/en-gb/dash-cams/522gw-dash-cam/

I have the full set up and I find it faultless in it operation and quality of pictures, unlike earlier cameras which suffered from dodgy (old?) software, and some poor thought out plugs and sockets.

It will start up when parked for a very short while. It managed to capture a bit of video of someone backing off after clipping my rear bumper, whilst left in a car park. Reg Number recorded quite clearly aswell as the startled face of his wife.

The laptop program show time, date, speed, and a small map of where you are.

I recomend the 522GW. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)

(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Thanks IanMetro, just what I was wanting to hear. Do you leave it in your car 24/7 ?

Really good it managed to catch another driver that bumped your car. Did you manage to get a claim from them to repair yours. 2014 Freelander 2 HSE Orkney Grey. Now sold.

Yes, I do leave the camera fitted at all times. I'm afraid that my car is also left with extra Garmin GPS in holder and tons of mainly coats and other junk in it.

My car lives on the house drive, and as I am getting older, it's not out and about much after dark.

The driver of the car park shunt kindly left his phone number, but the damage to my car was minimal (very small surface scratch on corner of bumper), I just applied a little touch up paint a couple of times and used wet fine paper.
No problem. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I was swayed towards the NextBase 522GW & from what you have said IanMetro I still am.

Reviews online give it as a pretty good all round camera too. I was probably not going to bother with the rear camera but after what you said it makes sense to have it. 2014 Freelander 2 HSE Orkney Grey. Now sold.

Anyone else with praises for their dashcam, heard Thinkaware & Halo are good too, any input for these cameras. 2014 Freelander 2 HSE Orkney Grey. Now sold.

I de-test dashcams with a screen so have a compact AUTO-VOX dashcam in the Freelander but they seem to have stopped making them.

I've installed tens of Nextbase cameras, mostly in rapid response vehicles and they are pretty much faultless, so I suspect next time I personally need a dashcam I'll go for something like the Nextbase 300W.

I've been using the Thinkware F770 complete with rear camera for about 4 years,
hard wired in so left in the vehicle all the time.
Can't really fault it, sometimes the lane departure awareness can beep a bend,
if I have to replace it, I would look at the market but probably stay with Thinkware. DAVE.

Hi has anyone changed the battery in one of the nextbase camera’s?
I’ve watched some YouTube videos and it seems easy enough but how fiddly is it really? 🤔 Al C

I too have the Thinkware 770 dual camera setup and I like its low profile that sits nicely behind the dotted area of the windscreen.
However, I don't like the limited control of the announcements, which can become overbearing, in particular the mobile speed camera ones which I found to be incessant and resulted in me having to switch of all camera warnings.
