I was watching a video (link was posted here on Freel2) and it showed the bearings for the blower motor.

The person in the video was rebuilding the blower motor and they applied grease to the bearings.

This is the back side bearing (hidden by the plastic cover)



This is the other side bearing (By the Hamster Cage)




The only problem is that the Hamster cage doesn't allow for access to the bearing

I would be nice if there was a hole to spray some lithium grease thru.

Look mine has a hole!!!!!!!




I'll post here if it makes it quieter.

Note: its not very noisy but I wanted to grease it when it starts making noise instead of waiting for it to be unbearable.

Excellent topic and post; when I did my front struts I should have done this as my fan has a wee bit of a whine under hard deceleration and when cold for about three minutes. If work slows down, I will pull the wipers and remove the window to engine cover and spray some lube in there.

full disclosure my hamster cage didn’t have a hole in it until my drill got close to it.

One day update.

Yesterday before the grease --> switching from the lowest speed to full stop and it would make a noticable noise as it came to a stop.

Today same test ............ Nothing

Maybe its still spinning (very very slowly) I have no idea.

Yesterday I knew exactly when it stopped.


Result!!!!

Clearly it worked but the question is for how long, if the noise comes back in a week I am not taking this apart every week.

If it lasts a year I could do this every year no problem.

Now this brings up the question for the wiper mechanism, since I'm in there what do I need to lubricate at the same time?

Update

Its been over a week.

I did notice a little noise on cold days.

It is better than before the grease but still slightly noticeable if you don’t talk and you turn the radio off and have the windows up.

Today it’s 60F and I checked the fan and it’s very quiet.

It’s silent enough that I can’t tell the difference between the sound of the moving air and the sound of the bearing.

For me that’s good enough.

I am declaring victory.

I can’t remember when the fan was this silent.

Its been years at least.


I recommend this upgrade to anyone (just drill a little hole and spray some grease)

Lol............you know I have to do this now Paul! Thanks much. My fan is only "noisy" in sub zero temps and under hard deceleration.

.......BUT, now I have to do it!

 Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

6 month update!!!


It is still quiet.


Because I removed the wipers and cowl so that the windshield could be easily replaced I did add more grease.

Maybe it should be greased once a year.


While I was in there I also turned on the wiper mechanism (with the wipers removed) and I sprayed grease on the joints.

I'll post here if I have to change the blower motor

Lithium grease, excellent!

Update:

Drilled and lubed mine today. Initial 20 seconds, a very low whine but now the whine is totally gone. Fan seems quieter as well.
Need a long nozzle or MacGyver the '"straw".

I have a 2013 facelift FL2. The blower motor is very, very hard to get to. Apparently it involves removing the dash. Can someone confirm? It has started to squeak intermittently.

I've never looked closely at a 2013 but it is unlikely that Land Rover changed the way air flows in the vehicle.

A change like you are describing is expensive and the customer is not likely to notice any improvement.


For my 2008 LR2 to get to the blower motor I removed them windshield wipers and the plastic panel under the windshield wipers.

Then I drilled a hole in the location shown and I added some Lithium Grease.

PS I checked a Land rover Parts supplier that I use

And the blower motor is the same for all the LR2's and it is even used on the EVOQUE
