Nuts

I had to change 9 of mine as I could not get a socket on them so had to hammer them to remove ,
It's like Chrome covers were twisted!

Yep, it happens. Replaced all twenty of mine last year on a just-in-case basis, as a few were starting to get difficult. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

I think I am right in saying that the wheel nut covers will be damaged if you use any thing other than a full sized 6 sided socket. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

yep had to replace mine too, not cheap but apparently they rust under the cover and swell up making it impossible to get a socket on without a lot of brute force!

The problem I have had in the past is that if the chrome cap separates and starts to spin on the nut, you are left with a wheel nut that is very difficult to remove at the road-side. You get a bit of advance warning when the chrome cap starts to expand and the wheel spanner no longer slips on easily, so nowadays when I see that starting, I replace the lot, for peace of mind. I'd rather spend £70 avoiding the problem than have a couple of hours at the roadside waiting for the AA, just to get a wheel nut off! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Chrome covered steel nuts are a complete pain in the a**e. I have them on my wifes x type as well as the Freelander. Fed up with replacing them at a cost, I have stripped off the chrome covers to reveal a 19mm steel nut underneath. Not as pretty as the chrome, but the pain in my a**e has now gone away Laughing

Once the stainless steel over cover is removed, you can get plastic push on covers, which makes the nuts look a bit better, and the covers come off easily, so a socket can be used as normal. Wink Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Firenze Red

Winter wheels on today… one set of 4 nuts very difficult to fit socket onto and to undo, one set of 4 less difficult (same side) and the other two sets of 4 ok. All 4 locking nuts ok.

I have two 21mm sockets - one of which is a looser fit than the other so got away without using a hammer today but I didn't try the supplied wheel brace for fit. Replacements are on the near horizon I suppose along with a new trolley jack as mine has come over all self lowering since the summer wheels were fitted six months or so ago.

Friend of mine had a Toyota LandCruiser and bought some replacement wheels with tyres cheap off eBay. When he came to fit them he found that the standard wheel bolts weren't long enough to reach the hubs due to the extra thickness of the alloy wheels. Result was that he had to buy 24 special wheel bolts for nearly £200. So much for buying cheap stuff on eBay Laughing Laughing 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Yesterday because I had a couple of slightly swollen nuts (ooooo mrs) I bought a full set of Nuts with captive washers now they have just one set left, They also sell the ones without the washers.

Strange postage thing going there… their rates are:

    £4 - up to five wheel nuts
    £10 - six or more


If you need up to 10, place two separate orders = £8. If you need 11 or more, one order = £10.

I know… I need to get out more Laughing
