Giving a realistic miles-per-year figure can drastically reduce the cost - don't ask for 12000 miles per year if you realistically only do 6000. I just renewed my 2014 SE Tech with 10000 miles per year, was £220 with £150 excess from Quote Me Happy. (Had previously been with Privilege for a number of years but they quoted £330, and removed the 3rd party cover for driving another car) |

This is something you can normally amend later in the policy if you dont quite get the figure right or for some reason you start doing more miles and they may well only charge you the pro-rata rate so if your in month 10 or 11 and your near the max miles you should be able to add some extra for not much cost hopefully . my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars! But its now gone way up Norf |

Don't be tempted to say you only do 3,000 miles a year when you actually do 30,000.

The problem with amending your policy these days is they charge you 'Admin Fees', a hidden cost they can use to recoup their lower headline rates from.

I'm sure they make it up as they go along. Renewal in from Admiral - multicover car and home etc. In the past few months I've retired, so no commuting cover needed, and partner has also stopped work and is officially a 'home person', so no business cover required. Called Admiral, expecting a bit of a reduction, but told the premium would actually go up by £45??. They would then be happy to reduce it by £59, effectively a saving of £14. Bit of bartering brings it down a bit further which I said I'd think about.

The youngest (36) has just swapped cars with his Mum - both MG3, same specification, same colour, registered on the same day. The cost - a £4 per month reduction for the next 9 months with a £15 alteration fee!

I had the same issue last year with AF when I changed from a D2 to a FL2. Adrian Flux response to a request for a quote to change vehicle was that my current insurer would not insure the Freelander and that I would need a new policy. The proposed premium was at least 40% higher than what I was paying for the discovery. Plus the admin charges for terminating the policy wiped out any refund of the five months it still had to run. Moved to LV for a premium and cover similar to what I had paid for the Discovery and at renewal time this year it dropped about £40. |

Spoke to a human at Admiral rather than the 'computer says no' I tried to deal with at the weekend and was informed that my previous job with the Ambulance Service attracted a low rating than my present one of being retired. So clearly driving 12 miles a day to work was considered less hazardous to other road users than letting this old git of a pensioner out on the road |

It's that annual question again. An insurance company is only any good if it pays out and has reasonable prices. OK so it's worth paying a few bob more to go with a reliable company. I've been with LV for yonks and never had any bother with them but this year they have wacked up the price by 20% which is OTT. I've shopped around and the cheapest price was £130 less than LV want. The policy I like the look of best is with the RAC at £52 less than LV. I have yet to contact LV and expect I will get the price down a bit and if it is close to the RAC then I will stick to LV.
