Front Springs and Shocks - price for replacement

I've broken a front spring so am planning on getting a garage to do the front shocks and springs. I normally do my own work but health forces me to use a garage. I've been quoted anywhere from £520 to £780 inc VAT. What is a reasonable price for this work?

I have had 3 go in the last 2 years -same age as yours. Doing a lot of walking and keeping your eyes open you would be amazed at the number of bits of broken spring you see in the gutter although all my broken bits stayed within the spring coil. Silver 2009 HSE

What size rims does the car have?

Could be a higher percentage springs are breaking on cars with lower profile tyres. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Standard rims for the 2010 XS model - so not low profile.

Well that rules out that possible theory! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

You should be able to get aftermarket replacements (shocks and springs) for £200 or less. Time wise it'll depend on how corroded/tight the bolts and ball joints are. You also need decent spring compressors, I ended up at my local friendly mechanic who let me use his.

I've done both of my fronts in the last couple of years - they both failed within a couple of months of each other. - the last one failed while it was parked on the drive, we heard the bang in the house as it failed !!! Fortunately both failures were at the end of the spring and it was still seated on the pan (although ride height was slightly lower) and was still driveable.

From memory it took me about 3 hours for each side.

Car is still on standard 17" wheels.

My father-in-law has just had his Fiesta spring break (57plate with 75K) as he drove it out of the garage.

As GlynnB says - just look along the road and you'll see the broken bits that have fallen off. I've read somewhere that the possible cause is corrosion introducing a weak spot. Both of mine (and the F-I-L's) had lost the protective "paint" and had some corrosion at the point of the break.

Final note: check what parts the garage are fitting, if they are using genuine parts it'll probably explain the apparently high price.

Suggest you use someone versed in late Land Rover as the top mounts for the strut have to be clocked correctly when refitting otherwise geometry will be incorrect. Also would replace top mounts and bearings plus bumpstops at the same time

I feel the pain! Front near side spring on my 59 plate FL2 has just broken (near the base of the spring) it should be in my “go to” garage sometime next week.

I think both mine failed due to the car not being used for a few months due to lockdown and hospital treatment...
