I delivered a card to a friend's house this evening and ended up standing in the drive chatting for about 30 minutes. This evening was cool and dry. As I hadn't intended to stay, I'd left the engine running and the driver's door open - lights on but fan, radio etc off.
When I got back in to the car, the red light was on and the temp gauge was in the red.
I cranked the heater up and blasted the fans while I drove home. The temp returned to normal within half a mile at around 30mph.
Any ideas why she did this? I don't want her overheating if I get stuck in traffic in the summer....

Note: for the Volvo S80 I did so preemptively because it was making a metal on metal the bearing is failing sound

One last thing, with the LR2 in motion the fan isn't really needed as long as you drive above 30 MPH and you don't stop or slow down.

PS I upgraded my single fan LR2 to a Volvo S80 dual fan and it works fine, for the Volvo I went with a VDO aftermarket dual fan but I had to shim it with washer to prevent it from rubbing on the shroud and its fine after this minor adjustment. You can bypass the controller and power the fan directly if you remove the connector and apply 12 Volts to the terminals. Let me know if the motor works and I can provide more debugging tips.

£345 for a new radiator fan! That's insane

It might just be the controller module, which a darn sight cheaper......I think a Mondeo of the same vintage is the same part, but needs checking before you buy. Regards

What I would buy is

VDO / CONTINENTAL FA71811 $228 Dual fan assembly with controller This is for a Volvo S80 but the LR2 is based on the Volvo S80 and I am using a Volvo S80 Fan in my LR2 (actual Volvo part) and this VDO fan in my S80. I got the Volvo Fan for my LR2 because I wanted the dual fan setup.

The VDO fan blade did rub slightly against the shroud so I shimmed it with flat washers.
