So i hate pulling into a petrol station on fumes - I try and keep at least half a tank of fuel in the car at all times, and a decent store of fuel at home (not QUITE doomsday prepper style) but this morning did raise the question in my mind of how far COULD you push this in an emergency?

I’ve seen that sort of figure once & was driving with a very light right foot for about a km & holding my breath .

I thought there was a built in safety margin whereby the engine shuts down before running out of fuel (diesel), so it doesn’t need priming but maybe I dreamt that! (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Personally would never run it that low for fear of all the crap in the bottom of the tank filtering through - was down to about 30 miles a few weeks back and filled up as soon as I got to a garage.

The lowest I had it was 7km in the outback but on sealed roads in North Territory. We had spare fuel but that day was too lazy to chuck another 10L in the car as we were not far from a fuel station.

Normally we fill the car up well before that. In the outback when we are remote we get the fuel off the roof as soon as we can get another 10L in the tank.

2 min 30 second to empty 10L.

Not only is it a bit of a distance between fuel supplies, because the roads are corrugated & often with stones, you have to let the tyres down & drive slower, you go through up to about 14L/100km.

This is in NSW which is not remote.

The distance to go is based on fuel used at the present speed and load in that gear, I once arrived at a camp site in France with 15 miles to go, the next morning it read 6 miles after starting with the nearest fuel 9km away, the readout varied between 2 and 15 miles to go and at stopping at the pump having driven through a 50km limit was 9 miles, going down hill in 6th will give you an optimistic readout and leaving a junction will give a pessimistic read out, my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I have gone below the indicated range, My indicator didn't show a minus so I don't really know how much was left in the tank beyond 0 miles.

At some stage the engine shudders momentarily as a warning.

If you have the Sat Nav on the nearest fuel station automatically shows on screen. I did make it to the station thanks to the Sat Nav.

It could be some time then before electric cars are common in rural Oz. Unless you take lots of solar panels and charge up during the day and travel at night? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

When we were down to 7km, we filled up with 84L, 20L for 2 of our 10L containers & 64L in the car. The petrol model has a 70L tank. So at 7km left about 6L left. The preceding drive was long outback sealed roads & the last 50km was mildly undulating. A pretty run of the mill road. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I had 2 miles showing once and there around the corner was a garage. I had been saying for ages to the gaffer its okay dear we will find some petrol soon, somebody was smiling on me.

yes, don’t you love it when you jump in the vehicle (after someone else has driven her) and find the range displays “0 kms available”. Been there. Don’t like it. Made it 5 kms up the road to the petrol station. Guy Pensa
