Heldex service

Hi I have a 2009freelander 2 and just wondered how easy it is to do the heldex service

That depends upon your competence, your tool set and space available.
Doesnt need special tools but is awkward.
Its all in the downloadble JLR manual ( a pdf file) - search "workshop manual"

I think you have a Gen 3 Haldex unit.

The replaceable filter and cleanable motor filter can be done with the Gen 3 in situ. But you wont get all of the old haldex fluid out without unbolting from the rear diff (4 bolts) - it seals with a replaceable large O-ring.

Im not sure if there is enough movement in your propshaft spline to allow you to do this.

To do mine (late Gen 4 ) properly the haldex unit needs to come off which means the prop shaft needs to be taken off the front of the haldex input flange.
To turn the prop shaft to get at the all the torx bolts you need to jack up a front wheel and rotate it. Jules

It's probably sufficient to do a partial change on the gen 3 in situ. Maybe increase the frequency a bit to account for not getting all of the fluid out. I sheared off a prop shaft bolt when I tried to remove my haldex, I'm mechanically experienced and didn't go crazy with the torque so keep that in mind.

LR has no recommended interval (their "service interval" consists of selling you a new haldex when it fails from lack of maintenance), I think Volvo is 40k miles, and I'm planning on a partial every 20k.

It should have a gen4, so it's not difficult, but it's best to remove it from the rear diff. Take the opportunity to change the rear diff oil at the same time.

Mine is a 2009 and Haldex is Gen 4

As above needs to be taken off the car to be cleaned properly.
There is a good YouTube vid on how to do it but I think it's in Russian. You don't need to understand what is said, just follow the actions. Really good tutorial. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Easy solution.
Go to main menu on this site.
Then common maintenance issues. Think it's second one down.
Scroll down to Haldex maintenance. Think it's second post down , there is a link to the video from Alex. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.
