Is the Freelander 2 now Obsolete

I am trying to source a new oil temperature sensor LR001368 and a couple of the suppliers I have contacted tell me that this part is either not available or is obsolete.
What's going on here.
Think I'll try and find out what the PSA part is. I don't really want to remove the old one until I have a replacement to put back in. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Dealers have to supply parts for 10 years after that they can become NLA (No Longer Available). I guess that applies to Models by year, so if it wasn't used after the 2009 model then it could be obsolete now. If LR aren't interested have to rely on third parties to supply them.

Again, thanks for jumping in shiggsy.
As the engine is a PSA Ford collaboration it would have nothing to do with JLR. It would appear that you just can't get them in the box with Land Rover on it. Bet you can get them from a Peugeot or Ford supplier if you have the part number.🤔 Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

Can you order parts direct from them? Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

A look up table showing the various part numbers across all car makes using the same engines, transmissions etc would be a great thing to have access to. I think there may have been such a thing once but then again, I may have imagined it. Question

You're right Reggie Perrin,
there used to be a way of checking cross and indexing part numbers,
I would imagine parts like the Oil Temp gauge would have been brought in
from an independent manufacturer, therefore undoubtedly used in other engines,
Maybe a Motor factors could trace the parts.

Thanks for the input.
There will probably be a manufacturer part number on the sensor itself but it's a bit difficult to get to. Sensor is directly below the starter motor. As said previously, same engine in Peugeot's and some Ford. Obviously the one in the Land Rover box will be the most expensive. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

The problem is these days that the sender may not be engine specific, many different temperature and oil pressure sensors will fit but the car software is configured to the sensors resistance/ volt curve, so yes any water sensor will probably fit but the readout may not be accurate. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Having had a car (Triumph Dolomite Sprint) that during my longish ownership went from 'Dealer 2nd hand' all the way through to 'Classic Car', I hoped that I could follow a similar path with my FL2.

I found that after the first 10 years or so, parts started to dry up from the dealers but many cars started to be scrapped and lots of cheap 2nd hand parts became available.
Then over the next few years, the Dolomite became rarer and parts started to become dearer and harder to find.
Specialist parts suppliers (like Rimmer Bros) then became very important and useful, but gradually the bits that went wrong regularly on the car (brake master cylinder?) became harder and harder to source, although if there was enough demand someone (including the Owners Club) would get a copied part made and offer it for sale.

Then gradually the Dolomite got rarer and rarer, and more expensive to keep going safely. Also trusted Specailist Repairers, who actually knew how to fix it, were then difficult to find.

The complexity of the FL2 seems to rule out the 'Scrap Yard' maintenance so I think that it may jump to the last stage and be expensive to keep it going as 'Classic'.

PS Unlike the Dolomite, I no longer even carry a tool kit in my FL2, not only is it very much more reliable, but I'm not sure that I could fix it on the side of the road. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Dartman the one......I would agree in part, except that the Freelander 2 has a PSA engine developed with Ford. Therefore exactly the same engine is used in other cars and vans. Each vehicle will have a different application but the engine will be the same. That is why there are parts which are interchangeable, same part different box and often different price.


IanMetro I totally agree that when a car gets older parts are harder to come by. But I was expecting a bit more than 12 years. I would imagine that things like sensors will be available for quite some time as they are generic to a lot of vehicles. Why would a manufacture want to develop a new sensor when a one of the shelf will do the same thing.

Watched a YouTube video recently of someone trying to repair a Ferrari, fault code said he needed to replace a sensor. Ferrari sensor stupid money. When he looked into it, same one is used on a Fiat Panda. Fiat price, cheap. No prizes for guessing which one he purchased. Sensor fitted, Ferrari working. Laughing Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

Gasman, I think you are missing the point, it may be a PSA/Ford engine basically and block and head are similar but don't assume the head gasket from a Citroen or Puegeot will fit, the thread for the water temp sensor will fit a variety of makes and models but the electrical side may well be different and therefore give inaccurate readings. Every instrument these days work on software gain, that's how manufacturers make profit, it's not guaranteed to be the same sensor across all manufactures despite it being a common engine. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

But if I can get the manufacturers part number off the original one it won't matter were I get it from, will it ? Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

Gasman, I've just had a quick call to my spannerman (originally trained at Peugeot)
who knows my Freelander very well, Laughing
His comment is any Peugeot dealer should be able to supply the oil temp sensor,
also noticed some of the Ford transit's have possibly the same sensor.
