Just thought I would update this post.

Turbo now working as it should after the Mr. Muscle clean out.

As for the poor starting issue decided to check out the air intake side of things.
Removed throttle body, cleaned and tested. OK
Removed intake manifold, cleaned and removed swirl flaps whilst I was there. OK
Checked glow plugs whilst manifold was off OK










Car starts a lot better than it did and it does drives a lot better but I think there is still a slight issue with the starting.

I am now looking into the possibility of air entering the fuel system when it has stood over night. Number one suspect is the fuel filter connections. Although I use OEM Purflex filters the 'O' rings in the quick release connections could be getting worn.
Not sure if you can change them especially as one houses the fuel temp. sensor.

Just as a foot note I always lubricate the connections with a small amount of silicone grease when replacing the filter. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

hi, put a washer behind the crankshaft sensor , then it will get a better reading from the wheel.

Sorry for the late reply. Still messing around with this starting issue.

As for the Mr. Muscle, my car does not have a DPF but from what I have read and seen on YouTube it doesn't do them any harm. It's a popular fix on the VAG sights, they have been using it for some time. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

Not sure what you mean regarding the cam sensor. It sits in a fixed location and can not be moved, unless you know something different that could help. Would be interested to hear your fix. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

Crankshaft sensor might take a washer behind it, but the camshaft sensor probably wouldn’t.

Just going off in a slightly different direction now.
I think the starting issue could also be related to my stop-start issue.
Therefore I am going to replace the clutch peddle position sensor and see what happens.

Trying to tidy up some of my threads.

Turbo now appears ok. Car pulls like a train. Obviously not a British Rail Train from the 1970's though. Rolling with laughter

As for starting issues, still there. I now think it could be the engine oil temperature sensor. When the engine is cold it reads 286 deg. C. If that is one of the signals the PCM uses for starting it will assume the engine is hot and deliver fuel accordingly. In this case I think it would be too lean hence poor starting.
This is just an assumption on my part as I don't know much about the electronics.
So if someone knows if the oil temp. sensor is part of the starting system please jump in. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
