Replacement oil for Bot 118 spec.

I am going to have all the transmission fluids changed at the same time at the Cambelt/water pump replacement in a few weeks time.

I have searched & read quite a lot on here in what fluids I need but I am still a little unsure which oil to buy for the power transfer unit, The spec says Castrol Bot 118 (expensive) but from what I have read there are good alternative oils for a cheaper price.


Is it better to have oil or fully synthetic oil & if someone could tell me what I need that would be great.



Castrol Transmax Axle EPX 80W-90 GL5 Mineral Axle Gear Oil (rear Diff)

ATF JWS 3309 Aisin Warner Automatic Transmission Fluid 5 (auto box fluid)

HALDEX OIL RAVENOL.

I have listed the oils/fluids I intend to buy so far but if there are any better suggestions I would like to know. Thanks for any help/advice.

I used Smith & Allan lubes:

Auto box : Tranguard ATF LV (its - AW-1, JWS-3324)
PTU: Geartech FS 75w-90
Rear Diff: Geartech EP 80w90


And Volvo haldex oil for the haldex unit Jules

Based on the oil visco specifications I recommend two alternatives:

CASTROL Syntrax Long Life 75W-90

or

LIQUI MOLY Hypoid-Gear Oil (1024)

I have recently used CASTROL Syntrax Long Life 75W-90 for my PTU

Thanks, everyone, for sharing your experiences. Since you've been using the various PTU oils for a while now, what are your thoughts so for those you had suggested?

I'm looking to find the correct oil for the PTU on my Freelander 2.

Hi everyone!

I just had the front transfer case (PTU) flush done by my Indy mechanic and noticed they used BOT448 fluid (LR052059, 75W/85) instead if BOT 118 (LR003137, 75W/90). I'll ask them about it but since they're not an LR specialist, I figured I'd ask here as well... Anyone know if the two are compatible?
